I put in a list for 9 coins. Almost immediately got a reply that he only had 1 of them. Better than nothing at all, I guess,.
Yeah... with his bargain list, I've learned that I need to be a "glass is half full" kind of guy ;-) I had almost as many requests as you and only got one as well. I'll bet Frank *hates* the 20-30 minutes after he sends out that email ;-)
Frank’s humour is great! There was one on the list I really wanted, but I was too late. His emails go to my junk mail every time, even though I mark it as ‘not junk’ on every email I get from him. Lame hotmail. I can’t wait to see what everyone gets! Erin
I just emailed Frank and asked if he had any left. I added the last Julia Domna and Severus Alexander with the standards to my list. They will have a happy home with FFIVN and me
Nice grabs. I probably should have checked with Frank as time passed. I was happy enough to get my single coin, I guess. Congrats.
I gotta admit, just when I think, “Man, Franks auctions are getting to expensive for me.” BaBoom! He drops this list of wonderment on us. And though there were many coins that I asked for that were already gone. The ones that I got were tantalizing enough that I’m downright giddy to see em! I hope you all got the best in your respective collecting areas of expertise. The last one of these I put in some orders and was OVER THE MOON with when they arrived. Hehe
I was a bit late to the party(FSR e-mail). Batted 1 for 21..... looking forward to that winner arriving in mail.
I picked up two this time around. I have to admit in the past I sometimes bought them mainly for the jokes. The two below were from one of his 2017 bargain lists. “70. PARTHIA, "Unknown King", Ar Drachm, Sellwood 30.16, Bust l./archer styd r; F+, nrly centered on large flan, good metal with lt tone, portrait quite strong. A beautiful coin, very tremendous, believe me, OK? I love this coin, honestly; and you know, I'm very smart, and I have the greatest coins, folks. Those other dealers are losers. And so ugly. Sad. Am I right, OK? Make your collection great again. And Mexico will pay for it! 23.95” “PHILIP II, Sest, LIBERALITAS etc, Thing 1 and Thing 2 seated left on curule chairs; F-VF/AF, centered on a smallish flan, some lgnds wk/off especially on rev; dark patina, worn to tan at obv high points. And - yes - portrait has FULL LAUREL WREATH!!! 18.90”
I have never participated in one of Franks auctions and it is only through members posts that I know of him. Having read some of his descriptions with the coins I probably would have put him on the " loon " list and avoided him A classic case of " knowing " the dealer.
Frank is very different than most dealers and people who know well the way most auctions work often do not like the way he runs sales. That is fine. There are so many dealers in ancient coins there is no reason anyone should patronize 'loons' as they define them. My favorite FSR joke was the coin depicting a 'Thermos Battle'. I suspect the younger half of CT readers would fail to get this and expect a joke about a Juice Box.
USPS Informed Delivery send me an e-mail this morning saying that this letter is going to arrive today: Could that be my bargain list coins already? The ecletic mix of 1980s stamps and the semi-cryptic return address imply so! Now I'm sitting at my desk waiting for the mailman...
Lucky you! I do love Frank's stamps. I am not a stamp collector perse but I keep all the ones that come on his envelopes.
I love the eclectic collection of stamps he uses, some from many years back. Looks like it might indeed be your coins!!! Since I'm in California maybe I'll get mine today, though Monday might be a better bet.
I'm in Maryland and tend to get his letters faster than most it seems. I wonder if it will be delayed though since I picked up the remaining Julia Domna and Severus Alexander. They seemed so lonely and in need of a home. What was I to do? lol
I have a few FRS items in my collection - mostly elephants or anchors on ancient coins. It is fun seeing the stamps he uses. He controls postal costs by using discounted old stamps. Frank is not alone in this. Our local coin club does the same when sending coin show postcards. As does a company from San Marino. Note - they charged me less than the 16.66 E shown in the upper right corner for postage and handling.
The mail just came and alas no letter from FSR. Just going to have to wait and hopefully see what is in @Orielensis envelope to tide me over
It came. It came! Call me paranoid, but we did just have over 2,000 people die yesterday here in America from COVID-19. I’m gonna let it sit in the garage and open it tomorrow. I’ll post my winnings tomorrow. Oh, the anticipation... Thanks Frank
