    Welcome to Coin Talk!
Since you are new to collecting, let me give you a little hint to help preserve the value of any coins you find. Do not try to clean, polish, or in any other way alter the appearance or surface of any of the coins. A common mistake of people who find coins like this is to try to "improve" them for sale. This will destroy almost all value (except, of course, the melt value of the silver content) the coin would have for a potential buyer.

It might not be 'ground down'. What's the weight? This should tell if it was or not.

  7. Also if the mint is an s is it worth something? On the last picture I posted of the dime?

  8. Also, what if there is no mint mark?

If you understand the minting process, you would know that it is NOT a mint error. You should read and learn more about how coins are minted. Welcome to CT BTW.

Are you implying that a blank strike can't happen at the mint?

I'm far from an expert, but without any other signs on the coin, I believe so. The hammer die would have to be loose enough to loose all contact with planchet and then the obverse wouldn't have any details. Think about the process and question yourself on how it could happen.

Not sure if legitimate American one-sided coins exist, perhaps someone can chime in...

It's very possible to have a one sided struck coin according to this site:https://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins.pl?coin=20187
Here's another reference to uniface coins:http://www.error-ref.com/?s=uniface+coins
As to your 1945 S Mercury dime, you can check the listings on eBay to see what they're selling for. It depends on the grade of the coin. Your photos are too small to estimate the grade. Others are better than me to give you a better answer.

I have seen many blank planchets. All I said was weigh it to see if it was 3.1 gms. Wouldn't that imply the coin was not tampered with?
