Does PCGS and NGC clean up coins before slabbing (not talking about the NCS service of NGC)? I've always been curious about that.
Uh, I've heard gossip to that effect, yes. Cleaning is such a harsh word, though, you know? I think they soften it up, some. After all, they are professionals. I think the preferred euphemisms are conservation and restoration...but, don't hold me to those, as they may have better ones by now.
I can't see PCGS doing anything to the coin other than removing dust. I understand they will sometimes take a shot at cleaning up a coin that comes in on guaranty issues. I could be wrong but thats what I thought.
It made MS64. I do need to verify this however. I sent in three wide reeded 1921-P Morgans. Received two MS64's and one MS63. I'm pretty sure the coin posted in this thread is one of the 64's. The original images are from an old flatbed scanner. Some day I'll learn to take real pictures. The scans tend to emphasize every little flaw. I should have the coin back from PCGS by the end of the week and will post some images. I also made a nice grade on a rare 8TF... 1878-P VAM 14.5 in EF45.
nesvt, have you determined if the one you posted was one that was graded 64 or not? I'm not expert grader, but I was suprised to hear that it made 64.
No. The coin soaked overnight in acetone before I posted the images here. I've heard rumors that PCGS is more forgiving on rarer coins. It's not rare, but this VAM variety is tough after MS63. Maybe they gave me a break. No. The submission just shipped from California. There was one 1878-P 8TF body bag because of "altered surfaces", but the three 1921-P varieties all graded. I am not sure if the coin in this post made MS63 or MS64. Should know by the end of the week.
Sorry for the delay. I blurred the cert number because the coin has already been sold and is going into a PCGS VAM Registry.
