Ok, folks... I need something coins to take my mind off of the events of the day... The US has a pending bill in the House of representatives that would re-establish the denomination of the US Half Dime. The current denomination costs 9¢ per coin to mint, 4¢ more than face value. The new coin would be half of the size of the US Dime and would cost closer to 3¢ to mint. The US Mint would then stop coining the 5 Cent denomination completely. I personally dispise the hi-jacking of the current five cent coin by the State of Virginia with the current mandate that it carry the Jefferson effigy and Monticello on the reverse in perpetuity, and see this as not only a common sense move by our government in improving our circulating coinage, but also re-claim the denomination for the people of the ENTIRE country. Not withstanding I am a HUGE Jefferson fan, but tired of the dead presidents theme. What do you all think? Does it make sense? Is it a victory for the common man? (Jefferson irony) Do you welcome a smaller coin in your change?
I think a coin half the size of a dime wouldn't go over very well. People would lose them like they did the three cent silvers.
It's just more of the same old fraud of convincing people that money should not have an intrinsic value equal to or approximately the same as the face value. Since not one in one hundred people understand money, it will probably pass.
As a collector of Half Dimes I myself think its a good idea but what design do you think they'll put on it. Another dead President? It certainly wont even remotely resemble any of the Half Dimes of our past. But then again, why should it. Honestly though, I dont think it'll be much of a hit with the general public either. As a collector, I would be interested in starting a set if it becomes reality.
a waste of resources, IMO as it would produce too much retooling of machines for too little gain inflation has already rendered our existing 5 cent coin almost meaningless in cash transactions, so why create a second?
Honestly anything to get the current run of dead presidents with the exception of JFK that have been on our coins for over 60 years!!!! JFK being on the half for a paltry 44 years, blech.
Like many times in the past, the reason to create a new coin is to abolish the first coin. The new denomination would be smaller and therefore less costly to produce. It also has the added cachet of not having a mandated design. One reason I happen to favor the new coin.
