I just want to thank all of you for your recommendations. I do think that I will go in the digital camera direction. I've never felt the need to own an iphone or smart phone. I guess I'm a Luddite in when it comes around to that type of technology. So, I will bite the bullet a order a Canon EOS Rebel T7 slr camera. There's a seller on eBay who has an attractive package. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EOS-...530655?hash=item2ce8dfa01f:g:UWYAAOSwaHlcrLQc I'll be frank - the last slr camera that I purchased was a Minolta SRT 101 in 1973 (still have it). Things have certainly moved along since then.
I just ordered this package. It includes macro lenses. Now, I'll need to remember which way to point the camera..... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EOS-...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 Thanks again.
You can do sooooo much better than that. I know you've probably made up your mind but if what you're after are quality coin pics you could save money AND unquestionably get much better results going with an old Nikon D200 and 60mm Macro Nikkor lens. It's not that I'm a shill for Nikon - Canon is just as good - but I don't know what is the equivalent for a solid body + macro lens this side of a couple hundred bucks. Save some money for a tripod and 5000k lamps too. Rasiel
I do agree that you could do better and that this is not the camera I would have chosen from the Canon lineup but especially I would avoid this 'package' for two reasons. The listing says the seller is away until April 20 so you shipment will be delayed. I read that as the seller lives in a Covid hotspot and is not allowed to go to the postoffice. Your package will be delayed more if the virus has not calmed down enough by then and New York reopens for business. Second, packages with all those items include many that are absolute junk. You do not want to use those auxiliary lenses which degrade the image quality. Similarly, you don't want to put filters on the from of the lens. This camera allows use of glassless extension tubes behind the lens which do not introduce aberrations and color fringing like these items will. You need the camera, lens, memory card (most computers have a reader built in for SD cards) and remote release. The tripod will probably be too flimsy to use for the purpose. I repeat, my recent purchase of a mirrorless camera suggests to me that they are better for coins than a DSLR. However the older DSLR's are cheaper and will take good photos. You will take good photos with the camera if it is used properly when it arrives. That depends on your learning and the seller actually shipping the package.
Thanks. This is my entry into close-up photography, and I have little doubt that this pursuit will evolve. I think the Cannon is a good entry level camera. The other items in the package may or may not be useful, but the basic camera is a good one and better lenses can be purchased as needed. I do not anticipate becoming a professional in this field. I'm retired and I have a lot of documenting to do with this collection. Also, photographing what I have is a good remedy to spending more time adding more coins to the pile. I tried drawing and gave it up, so this might be a more fulfilling activity - time will tell. Yes, New Jersey is a hot spot for the pandemic. I am patient and I have pretty extensive experience working with eBay, so if there are any issues with delivery, taking into account the expected delay connected to the pandemic, I am sure a satisfactory solution will be worked out.
