I received this coin recently and thought some might be interested in it. From Richard's Snow's wonderful Guide Book of Flying Eagles and Indian Head Cents, Whitman 2007 it is described as (Paraphrased for brevity) A press has been striking Liberty Seated 50 cent coins, obverse in hammer position and reverse in anvil. To strike Flying eagle cent of 1857, the reverse 50 cent die is replaced with a Flying Eagle obverse die and the press is cycled to seat the new die, causing clash marks. Then the obverse 50 cent die is replaced with a FE reverse die and cents were produced with the clash mark of a 50 cent obverse die on the FE obverse. Here is a photo from Snow's book used for educational purposes. Here is my coin and a couple of close ups. There is also a Snow-7 where the clash is with a $20 obverse, and a Snow -8 with a quarter reverse. Thanks for looking, Jim
Cool thread. We will probably never know for sure how these came about but the stories by Snow and Bowers are a great read. There are also 1857 quarters known with the matching clash from the (S-8) cent. These go for big bucks even in low grade. Here is the S-7 (clash with $20 gold).
Thanks to all. I would love to have the missing ones, but everything in its time If I get one, I will share it . Jim
desertgem , glad you joined CT , your threads have all been very inciteful , keep them coming . rzage
Great coins and photos. I too, have an 1857 Snow variety which I've posted here a couple of times before . It's a Snow 22. It's rare but not nearly as interesting as the S-9, S-8, or S-7. Bruce
Hi Bruce! Another good reason to get more reference material! My Finders book and CPG doesn't have the 22 I have another 1857 that seems to be a Snow-10, but there are a couple of things that don't exactly fit, so maybe a different one that I also don't have. I will post a thread on it. And every variety coin is interesting ! At least to me. Jim
