    JCro57 Making Errors Great Again

Do you mean a true Mint State error coin, or any coin? If you buy an unopened roll of 2019 cents, I guarantee they are all Mint State.

Those are some great pieces of property you have there. It will be a little while before I can get pics that good and I will never have such treasures. I'm very anxious to try some techniques, but I will never have times like this with my wife and son again (God willing), and I'm selfish enough to be grateful I have them and this time. The coins I have don't seem too impressive, but I can learn and evolve with what I have until I get better stuph and a little more practice under the belt.

Thank you again for being a good friend.

Mr. Plano, I've started asking everyone I know to help me find every Steve on your side of town. Then, I'm going door to door. So if a guy with a black stovepipe hat and white virus mask knocks at your house....... I'll help you figure out who it is?

Thanks for all the great guidance. I mean it<---the "thanks" part. I really didn't mean the knock on your door part. Or did I?

I was under the impression that even those were prone to nicks, scratches, and other stuff that knocks them down the scale. So, you still have to be lucky to get the highest grade.

I do know two things: 1) I was proud of some of the coins I had but was told they still weren't good enough to reach mint state's lowest level. That was deflating, but of course I'm still learning and I trust the forum's better judgement, and 2) If a novice like myself can find multiple goobers on every coin I've ever actually held, I can't imagine what you guys and grading services are capable of. In the end, I understand the answer to human subjectivity plus grading a coin. There will always be the chance someone truly could have the most perfect coin and they're out of luck if the grading person wrecked his Ferrari on the way to work that day. It's doesn't even have to be a conscious decision. Some days are just better than others.

Close? My wife (who really liked your post just now) and son, are going back to work tomorrow so there is one big change is this old man's appearance. I had a long white beard so I can volunteer as Santa at Christmas, but with her and my son going back to work I had to shave it last night. So, I really am a lot younger now. Nothing I can do about looking better. BTW, I always tell places my version of Santa is likely to tell kid's he is not real and uses the opportunity to discuss the birth of Jesus as "the reason for the season." I've gotten OK at not ruining childhoods in the process.

MS means Mint State, which is the same (I think, but could be corrected) for Unc. Both are a condition. If a coin shows no wear on the high points, saying it is Unc. means just that, same as a grade of MS60 (can be baggy, dinged, whatever, but NO wear). Going up from that the MS grades go up to MS70 (theoretically a PERFECT coin). According to Heritage:
    • Uncirculated (MS-60, 61, 62): An uncirculated coin with noticeable deficiencies, generally either an overabundance of bagmarks, a poor strike, or poor luster. Although most price guides will give a price for coins in MS-60 condition, in many cases this is a very unusual grade, with typical uncirculated pieces often grading somewhere in the MS-62 to MS-64 range depending on the series.
    • Select Uncirculated (MS-63): An uncirculated coin with fewer deficiencies than coins in lower uncirculated grades. In general, this will be an uncirculated coin with relatively ordinary eye appeal. Select Uncirculated is sometimes used to refer to a coin grading MS-62.
    • Choice Uncirculated (MS-64): An uncirculated coin with moderate distracting marks or deficiencies. These coins generally have average to above average eye appeal. Choice Uncirculated is sometimes used to refer to a coin grading MS-63.
    • Gem Uncirculated (MS-65, 66): An uncirculated coin with only minor distracting marks or imperfections. At this point, mint luster is expected to be full, although toning is quite acceptable.
    • Superb Gem Uncirculated (MS-67, 68, 69): An uncirculated coin with only the slightest distracting marks or imperfections. Toning is still quite acceptable and in these grades will usually be pleasing. Many circulating coins even of relatively recent dates are quite rare in such lofty grades, although modern bullion coins and commemoratives are often found in grades as high as MS-69.
    • Perfect Uncirculated (MS-70): An utterly flawless coin.

That's great information! I must have seen it somewhere, but probably not all in one place. I particularly liked the accusation that there's a distinction between nicks and scratches compared to wear. I've known there's such a thing as poor strikes, that eye appeal is more important to some people than others, that luster plays a part, but throw in the inevitable subjectivity of grading and that is where I usually get most confused.
If I was better at getting pictures (I'm working on it daily) I'd really like to post about a couple of coins I have, especially a few I know aren't going to win beauty contests but I don't know how bad they would grade. I just took a glance at ways to improve my phone's resolution and lighting. I have 13 megapixels, so any goobers are definitely my fault. I have a little time than usual so I'm going experimenting. If I'm successful putting the new stuph I just found with some great technique suggestions I've had I'll be back. If no one hears from me in a day or two, send any condolences to my wife and son, Belinda and Seaver. Belinda likes flowers. Seaver, video games.

    Thanks again!!

Can I simplify grading a bit so I can understand it better?
If it's not all that great, it's a DUD (Dumb Useless Disappointment) and if it's the opposite I would call it a STUD (Save Till U Die). I haven't thought it out well enough yet for stuph on the middle.

Does my brane scare anyone else besides just me?

So do I. I figure when I'm older, no hope for being more mature, and if I live through the next few months some day I will be able to contribute instead of take, take, take. I do feel guilty sometimes because I ask things that are simple as ABC to you guys but to me the questions are as hard as if someone asked me to square e=mc2, divide by 0, and come up with a pre determined cubed root whole number with 11 decimal points. Thanks for reaching out, though. By the way, speaking of ABC. Have you ever wondered if the alphabet is in the order it is because of that song kids use to learn their ABCs? Stephen Wright says that guy basically wrote everything ever written.

I just wanted you to know I started reading about macro lenses tonight because of your advice. I really don't know a lot about photos, but oddly I've had some good experience with A/V. Hopefully I can figure it out. Thanks again!
