Is it silver? I found one at work yesterday. Edited to say I went to my redbook and found that it is (correct me if I'm wrong). Is it uncommon to find these in change? I got it from a coin roll at work. Forget that! LOL Thanks for correcting me. I was looking at my one and only merc when I posted that. It's a 64D Roosevelt dime
As has been said, if it is indeed a 1964 US Dime, it would be a Roosevelt Dime not a Mercury Dime. And a 1964 dime is 90% silver.
Yet again not the best pictures and not the best quality coin but found in circulation for 10 cents so can't lose. LOL
Look better than the last one I found. It is in the safe some where. I think in the last two years I have only found 2 silver dimes - no quarters at all. Still a good find and you will probably get more at the bank. The next thing you can work on is getting close ups of the coins. My old eyes aren't what they used to be.
To answer your Question about finding silver change, At a local bank one teller found a silver half and a 1899-o morgan dollar in the last two weeks. The morgan was from coins a coustomer cashed in and the half was from the deposit from a fast food place. also at a second bank One of the tellers had some halves from a coustomer, not enough to roll so she was glad to have me buy them, and was I happy to buy them- 15 40% silver and one 90%. At all the banks here they are seeing more and more change being cashed in as food and gas prices go through the roof ( have to pay for that food and gas some way). So keep looking and good luck, bill
When I get any closer it won't focus and I've got it on Macro setting. I don't know what I'm doing. LOL I have good eyes and I could barely see the pics either!
I am confused. If it is a 1964D Roosevelt dime, then wouldn't it have to be silver? 64 was the last year of 90% silver and clad started in 1965. What is the debate? Is the debate over the date?
The debate was over the missnaming of the coin that has since been corrected. then determining if the 64 was still silver. Good find Kd, silver is still out there, just getting a bit harder to find. I think there has been more found since more people are breaking open their piggy banks and cashing in the change.
On my camera once I set the macro, I just use the zoom as far as possible. The key I found was getting the camera the right distance from the coin. Too close and it looses focus. So I have small tripod that I use that works great. The I us ACDSEE to crop the picture. Not as good as some others, but decent pictures. The best news is the company I work for is suppose to give me a new Cannon sureshot camera for my 25th anniversay. I say "suppose" cause I only have 12 years in with them(since they bought us) - but 25 years senority(which is only suppose to be used for vacation). I could have picked a 32" HDTV flatscreen, or 40 or 60G camcorders, grandfather clock - but I went with this from what I read on here. My coins are certainly more important than that other stuff.
Oops - here is a http://www.largecents.net/coinphotos/PhotoProcess.html that helped me. Also one of my favorite dealers.
Up until the last two years, I think I had only found a dozen or so silver dimes in change. But, the last 18 months or so I have been finding a lot. Not only silver dimes, but silver quarters as well. I find on average about five or six a week (dimes) in normal change. I think tough times are causing more people to cash in grandma's old silver hoard. Guy~
