I recently received this ancient Deer/Dog intaglio to go with a few others that I have. I like these a lot but they're kinda like other antiquities outside of coins... it's hard to determine age or origin. I don't really have any resources on these... so if anyone knows where to look for info, let me know!
It's Saturday night and a free for all! I've rephotographed this coin and have been looking for it in a variety of references, modern and antiquarian. It's well-attested. Bizya was a city in Thrace, now the city of Vize in the Marmara region of Turkey. It is home to the only open air amphitheater in Thrace, built in the second century AD. Otacilia Severa, AD 244-249. Thrace, Bizya Æ 23.5 mm, 6.89 gm, 7 h. Obv: M WTAKEIΛIA CEBHPA CEB, diademed and draped bust, right. Rev: ΒΙΖVΗΝΩΝ, Artemis standing right, holding arrow and torch; stag at her feet. Here's a new on for me this week: Divus Antoninus Pius AR Denarius. Struck under Marcus Aurelius. Rome, after AD 161. DIVVS ANTONINVS, bare head right DIVO PIO, square altar with double doors. RIC 441 This coin joins another Divus coin for AP: Antoninus Pius AR denarius Rome, AD 161 posthumous issue Struck under Marcus Aurelius. DIVVS ANTONINVS bare head right, slight drapery on left shoulder. CONSECRATIO, four-tiered funeral pyre surmounted by facing quadriga. RIC 438 (M. Aurelius); RSC 164; BMC 61 Now I just need the bird version! What's everyone else working on tonight? I have some uglier coins bought awhile ago I'm working through that I may post for fun later too.
Another new coin... I like coins of Crispus. He's an interesting historical figure. I think a HBO drama based on his life would be fun to watch. Due to being unable to read the mint mark… I’m not sure if this is RIC 347 (STR dot) or RIC 372 (dot STR dot). Both coins are nearly identical except for the extra dot which cannot be seen. Again... this coin joins many other Crispus coins already in the books... ...and others...
@Curtisimo Is that one of the 'Unmarked Series 1' coins formerly thought to be from London, but now considered to be 'invasion money' for the retaking of Britannia from Allectus?
Live from Coin Talk -- it's Saturday night! I've rephotographed this one, a coin I've only posted here once before. Julia Domna, AD 193-217. Roman provincial AE diassarion, 10.69 gm, 25.3 mm, 7 h. Thrace, Perinthus, AD 196-211. Obv: ΙΟVΛΙΑ ΑVΓΟVϹΤΑ, bare-headed and draped bust, right. Rev: ΠΕΡΙΝΘΙΩΝ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ, Homonoia standing facing, head left, holding patera and cornucopia. Refs: Varbanov 219; Moushmov 4530; Schönert-Geiß 540; CN 2877. Notes: Obverse die-match to CN 2877 (BnF) specimen. I busted it out of jail!
Even though I already posted this in another thread, I’m throwing in the free-for-all. I’ve only had it for a few days, and hey... it’s got a Pegasus. Phillip I AD244-249 AE octassarion 29mm 16.87g Syria. Commagene, Samosata Radiate and cuirassed bust of Philip I left. Tyche seated left on rock, holding grain ears; at feet, Pegasus springing left. Butcher 33a, BMC 59
No better place to post this, I guess. This wonderful Philip I ant was a gift from Secret Saturnia. Splendid. Philip I The Arab AR antoninianus, AD 245
Nice coin! I’ll throw in an Athena rocking the Aegis and about to chuck a lighting bolt at some poor fellow...
I took this photo awhile ago... but found it on my phone tonight. Nothing special, just having some fun with some natural light and coins some winter weekend. I get a bit bored photographing coins straight on anymore and don't spend much time on them... but lately I've had a lot of fun shooting coins in natural light from other angles and with other coins. This is just an iPhone photo... turned out pretty nice.
Happy Saturday Night/ Sunday morning!! My three favorite acquisitions this year so far.... M CARBO ....ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius OBVERSE: Helmeted head of Roma right, laurel branch behind, X below chin REVERSE: Jupiter driving quadriga right holding thunderbolt & eagle tipped scepter, M CARBO below horses, ROMA in ex. Struck at Rome 122 BC 3.21g, 18mm Purchased this one - not the perfect coin by any means (I don't own any perfect coins) but what an amazing portrait! .. :
Oooh I love that Titus portrait. Very realistic! Somehow I have nearly 1500 coins and not yet a single Titus coin. I'll have to change that!
Oh Thank you - I am extremely happy with it. Yes - I looked for over a year for a Titus coin... but with such a short reign - you know that you will need to compromise on something to get an affordable coin. I made compromises I did not expect (half the reverse, legends, etc) - but that portrait had me.
I have a Titus that looks much worse stylistically, has that typical Old-man Vespasian look. I’ll try to post a pic tmrw
