I keep reading about everyone finding cool stuff in rolls from the bank. So I went and got a box of dimes, $250. Every single one is a 2008-D. A little disappointed. Any tips so this doesn't happen again?

LOL - Sorry it worked out that way - maybe put one roll away and sell it 50 years from now as a Original Bank Roll. Try a different bank for the next box. Good luck...

i'm guessing that you ordered a box of dimes from your bank instead of them having one in the vault - if you didn't you could of just pushed them back

to be a good customer if you order it, you get what you get and take it - if you dont like the dimes take them to another bank or store unsearched

Yeah, don't buy boxes, just ask for $100 or so in rolls, each time...that way you don't get burned that bad.

Well Klunky, some people just flat out lie!!! :) :) :) :)

Seriously, you only read about the successes. You don't post when you come up empty or just find a few.

Also, don't set your sites too high! Dimes is a curious choice. I hope you're not expecting to find a bunch of silver ones, because you won't :( That has failure built right into it. You might find a couple every box, but even that would be good.

Nah, I just got the Cherrypickers guide and figured maybe I could find some different errors.

I don't think my bank allows that anymore. I took some rolls in several months ago and the teller said they have to use the sorter, so she broke them open and dumped the coins in the machine. I'll start asking other banks.

Actually I just walked in and said I'd like a box of dimes, but in the same breath I told the teller I understood they may have to order it for me. She said it was no problem and went to grab one. I didn't realize they were all the same until I got home.

Possible that you could find some new error and have your name in cherrypickers. If you have the time that is. Klunky finds rare 2008-d dime error. Like the sound of that?

Regarding roll searching, everybody has dud times with rolls. A few months back I went in and bought a box of pennies to search for wheats and pre-1982 bronze and turned up an entire box of 2007-D cents.

Dimes and Quarters are going to be a bust for the most part, I never do those. Halves are good for silver, in fact I don't do half rolls, but I check the teller trays at my banks for silver, I got a 1964 and a 1967 just last Friday.

Nickels are good, I keep the pre-1960's and 1968-1970 San Fran minted coins.

Cents are the bomb, much better chance for good finds. Last Friday I bought two boxes, turned up 22 wheats including a 1909 VDB, my oldest cent find ever.

I have several hundred wheats all total from finds in the last year. I usually go through 4-6 boxes a month. Most of the wheats will of course be 1940's and 1950's, but I still find a reasonable number in the teens and twenties. I got a semi key 1916-D in a box find just a few weeks ago.

Klunky, don't give up! You just have too keep trying.

My roll searches don't always produce keepers and I go through a lot of rolls.

Don't get all your rolls from the same bank, get $20 to $30 from one bank and $20 to $30 from anothers and use 4 to 5 banks.

On average cent will produce the most per-roll, 1 coin per 1 roll out of $20 searched, nickels: 1 out of every 3 rolls $20 searched, Dimes: 1 out of $50 searched, Quarter: 1 out of every 3 to 4 rolls searched.

Of course these average is base on your knowledge of the type of coin you are looking for. Not that I am a expert on any coins but I do use every resources that I can find on types, varieties, and errors.

Take your time when searching rolls, use as many references you can find, search a lot rolls and you will find the coins.

    Keep looking and Good Luck!

yah, I take a peak in the box before i leave, happened to me once. I got some cents, and they turned out to be new.. I kept the box though. with the tak of the cent leaving circ. it wouldnt do any harm keeping a box of the last few years.

    Hi Klunky,
You might want to ask the teller if they have any customer wrapped rolls of whatever denomination you are searching as those will likely contain more variety in mint marks and such.
    just a thought,

If you develop a relationship with an individual teller and let them know why you are buying a box at a time, you can avoid this. The only time I get stuck with a box of new UNC's is when I hit up a new teller. My regular tellers know that I only search older coins and will go out of their way to find me a box of re-wrapped coins. I always make sure I'm on my best behaviour for them as they are doing ME the favour.

Everything I was just going to say.
I get from 2 to 10 rolls of halves every few weeks and it's been about 10 years since I found anything worth keeping. And even then it was really nothing.
Way to late in this hobby for finding stuff in rolls or bags. You'll always hear of success stories but not the millions of failures.
This always reminds me of a guy I used to know that went to race tracks all the time. Every once in a while he would run around bragging about all the money he won. Seldom did he say anything at other times so we all guessed those were the normal loosing days.

I go to a "commercial" branch - that is one that services businesses - like in a downtown area - I seem to get better finds there. (I do get skunked on many a box - I think about giving up - then hit a box loaded with silver! which keeps me going.)

Found this funny. I finally bothered taking that pile of 2008-D dimes back to another bank. The teller had 3 halves sitting in his tray...one being nice and white. I figured it would be a 40% one, but I actually ended up with a '64. Some punk had intentionally scratched the obverse up pretty bad with a knife or something, but hey, the silver is still there. I'm happy again.

I just ask for the plastic wrapped fed rolls. almost always find at least potentials. Course i'm a penny searcher. I don't know if they do that with dimes

If you're in to searching rolls then you have to get at them different sources and keep on looking.

Today I asked for rolls of halves and the teller told me that the guy who just left the bank asked for them and got a few $s worth, no rolls. So I decided to order a $500 box and see what I find. It'll be in by Thursday and I might start then. I've had some luck with this bank on a small scale (8 silver coins out of 20 rolls).
