I always liked coins that retained some amount of their original silver wash. I wonder at what point people stopped being confident in the nominal value of these coins. I'm having trouble ID'ing this one. AE3 silvered Obv: bare head of young/child emperor left. ----RIS----NOBCAES(?) Rev: deity/emperor standing left, outstretched hand left. O-ϵ across field Diam: 18mm 1. The "RIS" that I think I see may point to Crispus, but Crisp seems to be older in most coins. 2. Originally I thought it was S-C in reverse field, but upon closer inspection second letter appears to be lowercase epsilon I'm trying to think of young emperors. Severus Alexander, Caracalla, and Geta spring to mind, but I don't think any of those three really match this portrait. Please post your semi-silvered coins!
I am a terrible photographer... these two pics are of the same coin. The first shows the remaining silvering.. the 2nd better detail. In-hand it is somewhere in the middle. Needs a re-shoot. Diocletian Laureate bust right. IMP CCVAL DIOCLETIANVS PFAVG. Genius standing facing left holding patera and cornucopia. GENIO POPVLI ROMANI. HTA in exergue. From Hereclea mint. Some pitting and much silvering still remaining
I should have noted that my top one is Silver Plated, not Silver Washed. You can see the thickness of the plating as it peels back. It is a Septimus Severus, Barbarus Fouree. The bottom one also looks to be plated with the silver peeling back.
