sorry to hear that dark mark is actually a scratch, but if you feel its a good fit for your collection, enjoy it. With its lack of other major hits or rim dings, and apparently unstripped surfaces, it would look nice in an album. Over the years I have acquired 3 of the 1846 date. 2 are graded, one raw. all are about vf. would you like to see my latest (and hopefully last) one?
Edit: absolutely, that would be helpful! Having seen a few, what have you seen regarding the die crack and lump I’ve mentioned? And yes it will be a pleasant coin for my collection, even with the damage. I’m overall satisfied with it as is in that regard.
This one has great color, but the rim bumps kept it from a straight grade. I don't see a die lump or crack on the rev.
I’ve seen worse in straight holders. They keep it to a b grade coin but I’d say 70% of seated dollars I see straight graded have problems. I’ve seen so many that are obviously cleaned get a straight grade it’s crazy.
Forgive me if I seem to be a “Negative Nellie”, but... How did the shield on the reverse escape the wear evident on the rest of the Eagle? Is this endemic to the series? Is the shield a low spot on the coin?…Spark
Unless I am mistaken, I think I do see the bump present in the first coin, it seems to be reflecting the light differently. The second coin doesn’t have it but it’s hard to see. I don’t know how much the lump would last through the strikes and how soon the die crack also started to appear in the coins. Lovely coins for sure! I have admired this series for years so I’m thrilled to finally have a genuine addition to the collection.
That is a fair question. From the other coins I’ve seen, I think it is a low spot relative to the rest of the coin. Even on coins with extreme wear, the lower part of the shield is almost always visible. Anyone else correct me if I am wrong though, this is just my own observations. In fact now that I think about it, I’ve seen similar things across this whole series, not just the dollar coins.
