A REALLY Safe Bank SDB

I have learned a lot from fellow CTers about bank SDBs (safe deposit boxes) the pros and cons. Yesterday I learned that my local SDB is REALLY safe, even from me!

My wife and I drove home from AZ last week, taking as many precautions as we could. Used a lot of Clorox wipes, and disposable gloves. We are now self-isolating for 14 days.

I realized that while the silver spot price is low, the retail price was still up and demand, at least in certain areas, was high. I wanted to sell some 90% junk silver but, alas, it is in the SDB. I called the bank and my SDB is available by appointment only, however, since I traveled out of the area, they informed me I could not access it until after a 14-day waiting period. I get it. I didn't want to lie to them nor endanger them for the sake of a sale of junk silver.

But when I tried to make an appointment for two weeks in the future, I was not allowed to. I was asked to call THEN and see what their policy was. Again, I get it. These are chaotic, unexpected and, for many, tragic times. Just posting this to say that on the "con side" of SDBs, this is one I had never considered.

I hear you. I have had similar. Before anyone makes major changes, though, remember the alternative. Home invasions, especially if they have a clue you might collect coins, were on the rise. Is it worth putting your life in danger over some PM if you pull the trigger and store at home?

    Hard choices.

You bring up a darned good point. I put a handful of coins in my SBD maybe ten years ago. I have been back only twice in those ten years, so I don't think much about the coins stored there. But yes, my bank is servicing only drive-thru transactions right now. I have no idea what I would do if I needed to access my box. Probably a good thing since my medical power of attorney form is in it and I don't like the way my wife has been looking at me these last two weeks....

Glad to hear your taking precautions and doing the right thing. The sale of silver can wait.

They won't let you visit and see you coins, and then again they might not be there. And their not responsible if their not. So just keep paying you fees!

So, how was the drive home? My friend is a long haul truck driver and has complained about rest stops being closed as well as truck stop restaurants closed. Pretty hard way to make a living but someone has to do it. Glad you guys made it safely home.

Thanks, @Mountain Man. It was a bit of a challenge. Desperately needed coffee and a rest stop a few times (funny how those two go together). The rest areas we saw through AZ, NM, CO, NE, SD, ND and into MN were open from what we could tell. Restaurants closed the entire way. No problems getting gas (wow, cheapest gas I've seen in a long while). One out-of-the way truck stop was closed except for a window to get coffee, and porta-potties instead of letting us inside. THAT was a sight I just can't unsee. Strange how some humans act like animals. Hope your friend manages to stay healthy. Millions of people depend on those supply chains.

I personally don't think it takes a great amount of imagination to come up with a safe hiding spot in your home.
Think like a thief when you hide them and they probably won't ever be found.

@Jeffjay, LOL. I've found so many good hiding spots that I've been unable to find the stuff again! Really! So, I've taken to writing them down and taking a photo of the note, then destroying the note. However, my goal is to not need to hide things in the future. I'd like big, bad old dog...or a vicious sounding little one who is actually a little muffin....but my wife won't let me. Hence, two large auctions in the past year.
