Re-Post: So when in doubt, I turn to you all at Coin Talk, because I know I can trust your input on the coins I have questions about, so thank you all for that! Tonight I was searching through my change and stumbled across this odd looking penny. It literally looks like Lincoln is looking through some old opera glasses at first look lol, but the more I studied it with magnifying glasses, I realized that wasn’t the case. To me it looked like extra metal in 8 little bumps, like the number 7...kinda like a glitch, hopefully in the machine? I’m curious if someone might have any insight at all, it would be gratefully appreciated on this end thank you so much
DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged Some bored person used a pointy tool such as an awl to make that marking. Not a Mint Error of any kind. Worth.. 1 Cent
Now that little anomaly is just odd enough to maybe hang on to. It's not a mint error. It's not worth anything. It's just different from your normal, average, run-of-the-mill Post Mint Damage. It's like.....Hey....look what I found. I have a little "Oddities" box where I put stuff like this. Just for fun. Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much! I will definitely hold on to it. Any advice on how to search for errors? I feel like I don’t know how to go about it, like do I use a magnifying lens for every coin, do I just look for discrepancies? I have yet to find one and feel like I’m going about it all wrong
Well, the first thing you should do is get yourself The Red Book. That is the single most useful and informative book anyone who wants to collect coins can get. You can find it on Amazon, either new or used, for as little as about $10 -$15 . Second, start learning how coins are made and what causes errors in the first place. I will give you links to start reading up on the subject. So will many other members. Third, and most important, hang out on Coin Talk !! and ask all the questions you want, post as many pictures of your coins that you can, and just "soak up the knowledge" of all of the great members here who are so willing to help others with the myriad of questions concerning Numismatics. Awesome!!!! Seriously thank you so very much, I really appreciate it a lot. I will definitely get to reading up on the links for sure. I’m super excited to check everything out now!
