Having gone through a few such collections in the past few years, I can attest that it starts out being kind of an exciting adventure, but after countless hours looking at circulated common coin after circulated common coin the head can begin to throb and fatigue sets in. I've found that most people who have such collections took them from circulation or received them from someone else who took them from circulation, so the chances of finding anything of real value remains pretty low. They also typically had very little knowledge of coin collecting in general, so they either guessed at what to set aside or they set aside "one of everything." Many people outside of the hobby also don't understand that the majority of things that are not in nearly pristine condition will tend to have little to no value. But people seem to hold out hope against the odds. So I have received piles of circulated and worn coins from relatives, along with a pile of old crumpled and folded bills. 98% show significant circulation and wear. 100% have very little value. Regardless, I do appreciate the gesture and I don't complain to them whatsoever, but seeing another pile like that made my head begin to throb again a little bit.
Update on this collection. I had offered them $900 for the whole thing back in March and they have accepted my offer. I told them that the price of silver has gone up since then and they didn't care. Cut them the check and the lot is mine.
My head is throbbing. I've been organizing My Father's Collection for four months now. Many hundreds of hours. I am still not done. He was an advanced collector. It was not nearly as organized as the lot you just bought. Mine was in cigar boxes, cookies jars, bank bags, small jars, tins, etc. Thousands of coins. I bought 2000 flips and filled them both sides. I looked at EACH and EVERY coin, including all the wheats. Thanks to COVID, I got on this daunting task and am very happy about it all. I have learned a great deal also.
Good to have another's trust ; I have 3 neighbors' house-keys , and a 4rth whose door stays open ; speaks well of you ! Since it's a grandparent's collection , could well be that many common dates are in XF / AU / BU condition .......
