We were so stylish! Grammy and Grampa! Hadrian, AD 117-138 Æ 'Limes’ Denarius, 18mm, 3.5mm, 6h; after AD 125. Obv.: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS; Laureate head right. Rev.: COS III; Genius standing left, sacrificing over a lighted altar and holding cornucopia. Reference: cf. RIC II 173, p. 360 From the Doug Smith Collection #397 Ex: JA91 @John Anthony Comments: This is a bronze, or ‘limes’ denarius of Hadrian with a fascinating fabric - struck in high relief in bronze of an alloy similar to official issues. If you look at Severan-era Æ denarii, like the Geta in lot 7, you’ll notice that the coins are either cast, or struck in low relief on metal that has turned completely black - suggesting a larger presence of zinc and/or lead perhaps. This is the first ‘limes’ denarius of Hadrian that I’ve come across, and a very interesting coin!
