Machine damage. If you look at the devices you can see they are reduced in size. A brief movement at the top of the stroke creates the illusion of doubling. This is mainly captured in the date and mm. The S in trust looks like master hub doubling which is common for the year across all mints. Wait for others to chime in though.
Dang! When is someone going to show us the real deal? Not from their error collection, but from change or CRH. Meow does not recall ever reading a post here that showed a 1972 or 1955 Doubled die that was just found. Are there no such treasures still left in the wild waiting to be found?
I'm sure there is and one day something will pop up. New collectors just need to educate themselves better in what to look for. Just like all the 1969 Doubled Die threads we see.. Always the same thing. Mechanical Doubling. No matter how many times we share the true Doubled Die variety picture which is in great detail.. They still get it wrong
Almost all of my DDO and DDR collection came from coin roll searching. I even have one if the 1972 varieties, but it is a damaged specimen from a roll of cents. They are out there; volume, time and effort is what it takes. And especially at the start, lots of false alarms.
I know of several folks who found a 1972 DDO in circulation, but only one who found the 1955. There is a nice specimen at a LCS in my area that I've spied for a while now, but I haven't pulled the trigger. That would be a grand find, but not likely. But who knows?!
@FooFighter ...don’t take it personally. I don’t...and I was as big a “knucklehead” as anyone before I joined Coin Talk. But after joining, the first time I had MD explained to me, I learned. I found out the 1964-D Roosevelt dime that had egregious doubling on most of the letters on the reverse was actually a manifestation of mechanical/machine doubling. We all can learn a lot if we listen and apply...Spark
No no, you're correct. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, that the coins I bring here are just a little different, than the true DD pictures I study. And then when.I see a pic of a real DD, I shake my head in acknowledgment. I'm sure I'm also guilty of trying to hard to see what isn't there. If it can't be seen with like a 10x loupe, then it's not worth all the trouble. I am pretty excited tho, I did find an RPM! if you can believe that. Lol I'll put that in it's own post tho. Thanks y'all. Foo
