It it just me or does this coin deserve an MS67? I think this coin is absolutely stunning. If the slab were not there what would you grade it? I think it's worth resubmitting as I don't think it's very likely it will come back lower. Maybe I should just try to get a CAC sticker put on it. Here is the link to the Heritage website. Their pics are much better than what I can take. The better pics are the second set where the coin is shown in the slab. Any thoughts on this coins grade?

Impossible to tell -- Heritage's photos suck, and the differences between a 66 and 67 are difficult (for me) to tell in-hand much less a photo. That said, with the rampant overgrading that goes on in this series, I would be very, very sure of your grading skills before purchasing a coin like this. Respectfully...Mike

Looks to have a significant number of hits (sun rays, legs, chest, face, torch, fields on the top 1/3 of the coin, etc). Way more than an MS67 should have.

Do you think it looks solid and problem-fee for an MS66?

I'm not comfortable making that distinction from the photos, but like Greg's post above, I am a bit concerned about the hits (even in a 66 grade). Furthermore, the luster is a big unknown (just doesn't show well in the Heritage pictures) and very important in gem+ grades.

Sorry I can't be more authoritative -- but grading from Heritage's photos is problematic at best. Personally, I'd find an expert in the series to inspect the coin in-hand, rather than relying on anyone's opinion from a picture.

Again, I would caution you from buying high-grade Saints unless you are comfortable grading them youself (or have a trusted advisor you can leverage) -- from what I understand there are a great number of overgraded Saints in PCGS holders...Mike

partly agree with Leadfoot there are a lot of overgraded saints but not at the 66 level anyways thats beside the point i really wouldnt be making bets on a coin to jump to 67 from a 66 based on the pics you should look at it in hand and make a decision and in order to win the crackout game be prepared to lose :)

would i be buying that coin if i was looking for a 66? no i would want a coin that i couldnt take my eyes off from :) hope this helps

Hard to say. There appear to be some spots on the reverse and some unusual coloring on the obverse. However, it is near impossible to tell what this is in person based on the picture. It could be stunning color in person.

And it would have to be to deserve a 66, much less a 67.

Richard, take a look at the coin in Spock's signature - the 1913 $10 Indian*. You can get a better look at it by clicking his name in his post and choosing "view public profile".

That little jewel is in a PCGS MS64 holder. 64 ! Blazing luster, almost completely mark-free...

How fabulous would it have to be to warrant an MS67 ?

Think about it this way - the St. Gaudens design is widely considered to be one of the finest and most beautiful coin designs ever. MS66 is a very, very high grade. So an MS66 Saint should be an absolutely magnificent coin.

How much more so to "deserve" an MS67 ?

I would be very cautious thinking I could get an MS66 -> 67 upgrade on a Saint. It would have to one absolute bomber of a coin.

    * There was a very good "grade this" thread a while back with this one. I looked for it but couldn't find it. Spock, can you post a link to that thread ? I think it would be very interesting in this context.

I'd listen to the others advice on this one , the chances that this would regrade a 67 is very small .
