Some nice coins - and a déjà vu. Some "core" elements of those designs are actually pretty old: Even the early cent coins from British East Africa feature the crossed teeth (tusks), and the floral decoration on the other side. The BEA shilling shows a lion in front of mountains - on the coins from Uganda the lion is replaced by a crane, but the background (Mount Stanley maybe?) is the same ... Christian
They also issued a 2 Shilling in 1966. This design was 1966 only. 1969 and 1987 had different Reverse designs. This is a proof copy.
My catalog (Schön 2014) also says "RM". That would be the Royal Mint (UK) while the later circulation coins (50 to 500 shillings 1998 and later) were minted in Canada. Now whether that catalog/edition is right or not, I don't know. Christian
My 1966 Ugandan proof set of these same coins certainly has a style that would indicate the Royal Mint minted the first Ugandan coins after independence.
I stand corrected. My source was for a different year. the 1966 series are from the Royal Mint, London http://colnect.com/en/coins/list/country/2503-Uganda/year/1966
