Could any of you experts out there help me identify the country of origin and date of what I believe to be a ducat. As you can see oin the attachments it says S.GEORGIUS EQUITUM PATRONUS on the Obv and IN TEMPESTATE SECURITAS on the rev. It is about 15 mm in diameter and weighs 1.15grams. It is quite thin and appears to be hammerd. Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks, Daz!

    Remake of St. George Taler?

Almost identical to a "George Taler" from Chemnitz, Eastern Germany, 1st half 17th C. Those may have been used as amulets by horsemen. But the 17th C. amulets were differently spelled:
obv. S:GEORGIVS EQVITVM PATRONVS - St. George Patron of Riders
:) after S, no space between S:GEORGIVS, V instead of U, the correct Latin writing)
rev. IN TEMPESTATE SECVRITAS - Security in Storm
    (also V instead of U).
    34mm, copper or bronze

Remade in Hungary late 19th C., this time the U was used instead of V, but the combination S:G... remained (S: and no space thereafter).
    36 mm, alloy ?

If yours is gold, that may be another variety. As this is a horsemen's amulet, and horses were the main means of transportation for millennia, I guess that such pieces were issued over and over again, in many places. A God-fearing rider simply wouldn't leave without one...

    Happy riding, eh...searching!

    gold ducat

    Hi Dazman
Just wondering whether you ever found out more about your coin as I have one and have never found the story behind it either. Does your have stamps like hallmarks on it?

Howdy Anna - Welcome to the Forum !!

Dazman hasn't been around in almost a year so I doubt you'll get a reply - unless he's lurking out there ;) But I suspect what you have is the same thing as explained already. By all means post pictures though and we'll see if we can offer any further help.
