In your opinion, what is the official start and end date of the Westward Journey Nickel series. I'm getting the impression it started in 2003 THROUGH 2006 I like collecting these nickels and don't want to miss the boat. Sorry for the mundane thread. Thanks, Jeff
well i could take an educated guess, but we have people here who know this kind of thing way better than me. ill leave it to the experts.
Hi guys. The Westward Journey nickel series runs from 2004 to 2006. Enjoy collecting nickels. I sure do.

The program was supposed to start in 2003 but the mint failed to get the first nickel ready so it was moved to 2004 (2 nickels) and 2005 (2 nickels). A total of 5 could have been produced but it couldn't be done in the time for 2003. Next year (2006) will bring another design of Jefferson and Monticello for eternity unless we pusuade congress to get all the dead politicians (Presidents) off of our coinage (leave them on the currency) and do something New and Exciting with our coinage! Nice thought but it will never happen!
We've got two new nickels last year and we get two new nickels this year. Then we get a new nickel next year and it stays with that design. So we've got three obverses and four to five reverses (one top beaurocrat wants a new obverse and the OLD reverse, and the art commission wants completely different designs, and the final decision is by Treasury secretary Snow, who isn't talking yet)
Hey guys, I've got this nickel I don't want. I ordered a silver Libertad from Littleton (before I found out how pricey they were). When it came in they had slipped a nickel in there with it. I went ahead and took it because I didn't want to fool with sending it back. But I really have no interest in nickels and I'd gladly stick it in the mail for free if anybody wants it. It's an uncirculated 2004-P still in the wrapper. Just let me know and I'll stick it in the mail with my bills tomorrow. -Illya2
As far as I recall, the Mint has to keep Monticello on the reverse (unless and until the law is changed, which could happen tomorrow if someone pushed hard enough). BUT…it does not have to be the Monticello we all know and are tired of. My proposal is for the Mint to design whatever they want (maybe a decent Buffalo), and then make Monticello the size of a flea and stick it somewhere inconspicuous on the reverse. That would shop those Congressional monkeys from Virginia.
