    The rim is smooth?
I marked in yellow around the rim which shows dings, smooshes, scratches, pushed in or out, etc. at some point since it was minted.

what i'm trying to do (and all of us) is to make you think more "critically" at what you are seeing. You may not be able to think of "how" something was damaged, but looking at the coin you should not dismiss all the scratches, dings, wear areas, and yes, even the gashes.

Coins are probably the only thing people collect that they don't protect.
If you collect watches, crystal, or anything .. imagine taking that Collection and piling it all in one bag (like if it was a pocket, purse, coinstar machine, Loomis, etc) and shake the whole thing up .. or put in a cup holder and let it sit in soda pop for hours, days, and maybe weeks (think of those poor beanie babies).
Circulated coins also are used for more than just money. They are used in hobbies for artsy stuff and get all sorts of damage, plus they are used as an alternative in other stuff too which they become quickly damaged. and after they are damaged they are still worth face value, something that doesn't happen for anything else.
