a trade dollar I acquired last year, just got around to imaging. What's your opinion on the grade? (at pcgs, the chopmark does not affect the numerical grade) What do you think of the coin, aside from the grade? I'll post the assigned grade Thursday PM. Thanks!
As far I know, Anacs will also call it details. ICG now straight grades them too (from what I have seen in the newer blue label holders).
It seems that they define chop marks as coming from the Orient. There are quite a few different ones and I wouldn't be surprised if this is also from Chinese merchants. If it wasn't from the Orient, it would get a details grade for damage/graffiti. Besides chop marks, PCGS and NGC both grade certain counter-stamps. This is one example: https://forums.collectors.com/discu...western-reserve-numismatic-club-counterstamps https://coins.ha.com/itm/commemorat...ounterstamp-ms66-ngc-breen-7540/a/1274-3938.s
Thanks for all the comments and guesses! And now for the reveal.... This coin was in Bruce Morelan's collection, at one time the finest collection of chopmarked trade dollars. He sold the collection to another collector of chopmarked coins, (now the finest graded collection of chopmarked trade dollars); this duplicate was sold to yet another chopmark enthusiast, who in turn sold it to me when he changed collecting interests. For those who guessed AU58.. a perfectly reasonable guess.. my photos don't show the unbroken luster, which is not especially thick, in fact the underlying surfaces are somewhat prooflike. I think there are enough light circulation marks to account for the grade, but no major hits.
Cool story. I saw the luster breaks in the pics where I graded it 58. I can see it at 62 as well. Too many bag marks for higher I took some as light circulation marks too. Is tough to grade these slider coins from pics a lot of the time
+1 Would've liked to move the coin under a light to examine those areas. Nice Trade Dollar regardless!
