This appears to be a reeded edge on this cent. It runs all the way around the cent. It weighs 3.1 grams. What caused this? 1976crop.jpg sidecrop.jpg 1976fullobv.jpg 1976fullrev.jpg

Ken Potter has said about this type of damage: “This is damage from the inside diameter of a tube in a coin wrapping machine. The inside of the tube is slotted to allow air to be blown through to facilitate the passage of coins. This one jammed.”

The marks are very unevenly spaced. It looks like someone had a lot of time on their hands. ~ Chris

I have one here somewhere almost exactly like the OP'S coin. I have always thought someone altered it . Maybe I have learned something new.

I’ve got a couple like it that I’ve always figured as damage. Have to search them out and post if I ever get back to Syracuse

I'm with @Pete Apple as I've seen this same issue but can't remember exactly where and the conclusion was the same.

Jammed Cents are neat but I've never found one. Maybe one day.

Which ever, it is post mint damage right. I don't think the mint wrapped any coins at all until they started selling them like the 2000 quarters.

Darn... I had a whole story around this cent; a guy in prison - no scrap that, no knives in prison - a guy waiting for a train in Cerrillos New Mexico, a train that only comes once a week and you never know when... A bitter guy with too much time on his hands, one penny in his pocket and a knife he doesn't care for that much, just like his family didn't care much for him. Neither did Yolanda... etc.

Come on, that train runs once every weekday except holidays! Does Yolanda run the turquoise exchange? She was a sourpuss.

No, I forgot her name, but she was there running the petting zoo and old bottle depot;) Grey pigtails and glasses?

And while the train may run, I haven't seen any evidence it stops;0)

Edit: and you're right, I had my setting back in the 1890s. Seemed dustier, although isn't.

Actually it would be a fun area to get a place for a few years, but I suspect the internet connections would be more in Santa Fe. The houses in either place are similar in price to Flagstaff, but more land in NM. No Pigtails , wrong Yolanda.Jim

The first collector I met told me to never forget the third side, it reflects more about a coin than one would suspect.
