found my 1909svdb :D

ok guys i found it again the s is pretty weak. what a relief that i found it. does anyone have any links or websites where the weak s is discussed or worn out i want to be sure before sending it in to NCS/NGC again.

the cam is charging but i dont think the pics will capture it on this coin for some reason the and the vdb are faint i was worried i had exchanged this coin or given it away by accident

 

It's a possibility that it got some grease on the die on the mintmark location, and the reverse. Pics will most likely make it a definete on what it is though.

The book I am referencing is The Complete Lincoln Cent Encyclopedia by Shane M. Anderson. So far I have found this book invaluable. There is no mention of a weak strike S. They do mention only four working dies used to make the 1909 S vdb. All used the same S mint mark for all dies. A couple of points to review but High Magnification is needed to see the S mint mark. At the top of the S mint mark serif just behind the right serif you should notice notch. The Serifs on the right and left should be parallel. The S can be slightly tilted to the right.

please note the s is so weak that you might not be able to see it at all inthe images you just get an impression in strong light with magnification so what gives me hope is that the vdb is clear under magnification is it a grease filled die my imagination or something else? . help is appreciated i dont want to get it wrong on a coin that costs a couple of bucks. thanks guys appreciate the help

 

Do I see an S mintmark beneath the date on the obverse? No

Do I see the designer's initials on the reverse, between the stems of the wreath? No

Perhaps they are there, but I don't see them. Photos are not adequate to really see those areas clearly.

I'd rather have the beautiful Isabella quarter which is a great coin. ; )

 

If you can see an S, your eyes are a lot better than the photograph. There's nothing in your photos to indicate it is an S or a VDB. A closer closeup and/or different lighting may reveal more detail. The coin overall isn't worn enough to have worn the VDB off. I have a VDB (not an S) in AG that at least shows three little bumps where the letters are, although they can't be made out to be a V, a D and a B.

You could have a completely filled die S; you could have a completely filled die VDB, but it is unlikely that both conditions would exist on the same specimen to the extent that none of these letters are visible, especially when the rest of the coin's detail is relatively strong.

 

yea the vdb is visible with some effort no question on that and thats the only reason my hope is up because under 20x magnification i can see a light s i tell you its enough to make you crazy

you sure jack? i mean other than the mint mark what else are we looking for? i am pretty sure you dont see the vdb from the pics either. If there is anything else that would help identify let me know. I could also send the coin to you for a positive ID once you have the coin in hand you will see what i am talking about ( at least the vdb piece) and if its just a ordinary vdb no need to send it back to me just add it to the giveaway you will have for the YN

 

ok just looked at the coin again 100 % vdb and 100% there is something below the date is it the s mint mark or something else i am not sure
