Ebay nightmare

The bottom line is I sold an item on eBay but accidentally provided the wrong tracking number. The buyer waited until a week after the item arrived and then opened up a case claiming I mailed it to the wrong address. I went back through all of my receipts and found the one shipped to the buyer. I had already assumed I put in the wrong number when the case was opened.

I quickly provided the correct tracking information showing that the item was indeed shipped and that it arrived at the buyer's address. eBay won't let me remove the old tracking information without listing it as not shipped and relisting it. It now has two tracking numbers, but at least one of them are correct. The buyer responded in a hostile manner to my last message with the correct tracking number and delivery date of the item.

I'm worried that eBay will somehow still side with the buyer and refund the money... I will let everyone know how it plays out, but I'm concerned to say the least, and may choose to no longer sell with eBay if they side with the buyer.

Ugh that sucks. From what I know, ebay almost always sides with the buyer. you would think that something like this they would use a bit of reason but...

I hope things work out in your favor.

Like me then you're done on eBay! Without a shadow of a doubt they will side with the buyer , he will get a refund, and most probably you won't see the item returned.
Good luck...the Deck is stacked against you.

If he or she gets what they bid on it might work out. Just explain human error happens sometimes.

Please do yourself a favor and call Ebay. Explain the situation to them and it should go in your favor. I had to call Ebay 15 times to get my money back from a scam on Ebay, but I finally asked to talk to a supervisor and it worked out for me.

As NLL says, call 'em up. Persistence pays off. I've had to call eBay many times, even many times for the same case/reason. Mostly about taxes charged on Numismatic items.
I've had 2 situations where the seller sent my paid-for item to the wrong buyer.
The most recent time was just now. 3 weeks ago my seller sent my 8 piece set of Japanese/Philippine war notes to the wrong buyer. He's a good guy so I waited for him, and I received my package today.
The first time was something else entirely. I won a 1976?(I don't remember the year) Jamaica Silver Mint Set, in a presentation leather container, with the coins still in the sealed plastic for only $17.00 plus $6.50 shipping. What a deal!! For only $23.50 I won a set worth about $56.00 at the time, but he accidentally shipped it to the wrong buyer, a buyer in Belgium !! At first the seller wanted to just refund my money, but I said NOPE, uh uh, I wanted what I had won.
Long story short, he paid the postage, made it right for the guy in Belgium, and made it right for me. It took a lot of money on the seller's part and almost two months of waiting on my part but I finally got my set. A cool thing about it is I've got all of the mailing parcel packaging : to Belgium and back and to me.
Because of this episode, this seller and I have become great eBay friends. I have been buying from him for years now.

    Good Luck

This stuff happens more than you think. Sorry it happened to you. I suspect eBay will see the correct tracking number as delivered and that will be that. BUT even if tracking shows "delivered," the buyer can still claim that the coin wasn't in his mailbox, or that it was put in the wrong P.O. box, or that the package arrived empty. If he does, then eBay will side with him and force you to refund him. It has happened to me as well. Keep us posted.

I recall when Jello had sold a gold coin ,the buyer claimed he didn't receive the coin. Since it wasn't shipped sitature required just delivery confirmation.
I know for a fact for 3 to 4 years Jello would check e Bay for the coin to resurface for sale.
He had kept all paper work......one morning he discovered in fact a coin like his was for sale and the seller who else the buyer who never received the coin he was selling.
He contacted e Bay with all the information.....and believe it or not it still took like a year to sort thing out and he was still a loser on the deal if you consider all the time and efforts to prove that the buyer was a fraud.
Plus e Bay truly screwed many sellers as if you didn't link your SS number as well bank account with pay pal then if you sold an item and even if you received positive feed back you couldn't get your funds for up to 90 days! Like WTH?

There was at one time good deals found on eBay but the margins a seller needs to set high in order to cover all the ebay BS.
I never buy any longer on ebay.....I do use ebay for references, and do cherry pick for others.....but I have closed my account .
What's funny I get emails from ebay/PayPal that my account has a few dollars in it...well that few bucks cost them more to contact me than its worth in my pocket.
    So let it ride......:D

wow what a good read this thread is. Wealth of good info/comments. My only addition to Ebay bidding is two comments.
Never bid on an item that's not coin shown is coin shipped
And if you see " Estate lot/hoard" buyer beware usually worthless batch of trinkets.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I will call Ebay and speak to someone. It sounds like everyone who had to call did so to receive their own money back, not a product. Unfortunately, I'm not hearing anyone talk about an experience as a seller who mention getting to keep the money they deserved... hopefully I'll return with good news.

And... call center closed due to COVID-19... I might try the post office who delivered it and see if I can get someone to say they delivered it into the mailbox.

It can happen, so don't lose hope. But make no mistake, the deck is stacked in the buyer's favor. I think people often forget that there are probably just as many dishonest buyers as there are dishonest sellers out there. Kind of depressing.

eBay usually sides with the buyer. You mentioned not selling on the bay but another option is to block the buyer.

Of course, but if Ebay is going to allow a dishonest buyer to scam me out of ~$200, I'm not going to continue to do business with them.

Yes, call eBay. You will still have a hassle, but at least you may get your money back. A buyer once called my item "not as described"; eBay refunded his money, driving my paypal account negative and causing it to be suspended. This despite the fact that tracking showed the package had not yet been delivered! eBay agreed I and done nothing wrong, and is was obviously a false report, but sorry, you just got screwed by the way our system works. I finally got my money back, but still had a hassle restoring my paypal account.

Call eBay and explain the situation. You have a tracking number that shows he received the item. If not resolved satisfactorily ask for a manager. Make sure they understand If they side with him they are siding with a proven liar.

What you have is a lying, sleazy, dishonest buyer (lowest of the low) who is doing fraud. Be sure and block him. It’s too bad you can’t neg him and warn people.

I agree with NLL. I've had a couple of problems that were solved with a phone call to eBay.
