As most of us old timers here know you collect for pleasure ,not for investment. Here are a few examples why.
Here is an perfect example... of a one time hot Jefferson variety now not so hot ....but may be a good opportunity. C:WINDOWSTempE792 - 20200321_102850.jpg C:WINDOWSTempE793 - 20200321_103013.jpg C:WINDOWSTempE794 - 20200321_103047.jpg
An 1942 D over Horz. D four years ago this date and variety started a down ward trend.
The coin above in 2016 was a $750/800 coin in Au. About 8/10 years ago I sold an 1939 ddr double Monticello Jefferson in ms-64 @$1500.00 , today the same coin $900. In 64 .
Since the 39 double Monticello is a well known variety I wanted to replace my missing variety.
I purchased a Au.example from a well known member here....to fill the void in my set of variety Jefferson nickels.
So share your experiences in the ups and downs of coin collecting.....and is a market drop an opportunity to buy....or a sure sign that the price still has not found settled and a hard pass.

I'm concerned with the long term prospects for low-grade key and semi-key coins in popular series, such as Buffalo nickels, Walkers, Mercs, etc. In ten years or so, the number of people who collect them by date and mint mark will probably plummet due to the declining collector base. Liquidations of collections on sites like Ebay probably won't help, either.
