what's wrong with this 1959 nickel? The rim is magnetic

That nickel is not real. Someone has tampered with it. Just put the reverse. Looks like is was hollowed out and trued to pry it open...

 

Well, It feels like a normal nickel, but I think someone put a weird rim on it. At first a thought it was a partial collar until I found it was magnetic.

 

The nickel is real...The coin was encased. There is a ring around the coin. Hence the magnetic rim...

 

That's what I thought.

 

The coin is in a bezel.

 

And I think at one point, someone tried to pry it of.

 

I couldn’t think of that word to save my life!

 

Looks like it but it is not.. As stated it is a metal bezel that was added on. Many bezel are held closed with a screw but some are forced onto and around a coin such as the Nickel in question.

 

I had to look up the spelling.

 

Bezel.......should be easy to remember because it rhymes with weasel.......and weasels eat frogs.......

 

Does it really? I always thought the pronunciation was like beh-zul. Learn something new every day. Plus, I will be sure to stay far away from any weasels!

Ok so I was right. Phew

 

wrong, the nickel is real.

It was 'encased' possibly for a key chain attachment.

 

If you look a little more closely rather than a cursory glance, you can see a large seam and the remainder of a tab for a bezel loop for probably a necklace pendant. I've pointed it out with the yellow arrows the obvious areas.

 

Yeah I didn’t look at the obverse I seen the reverse and just went off of that. Should had has notice the rust stains on the obverse...

Once part of a charm bracelet. Popular during the 1950's and 60's. Some women would have a coin with each of their childrens' birth years on it. The rough spot is where the connecting tab broke off.
