I posted my latest acquisition in the big thread and it has resulted in some questions. An NGC graded AU58 that I put into an album. Is this a normal “In God We Trust”? And is this a normal 3? (one of the pics has glare from the album cover) Thanks, Brad
That is a really neat website. Although there is alot going on with the In God We Trust and alot going on with 3... I just dont think it is a 2 under it.
You asked about the lettering TRUST that's Longacer doubling. The dies were cut different as the nickel was to hard to strike. Thus the average die life was < 10,000 strikes or less.
cool, I had never heard of that: http://www.numissociety.com/content.php?135-Longacre-Doubling-A-discussion http://www.error-ref.com/longacre-s-doubling/
I sent these to the owner of the site, Howard. He thinks Longacre Doubling. No added value. But still neat to see.
True during the early years, by the end of the series they had gotten the die life up to close to 30,000. Which was still pretty pitiful since the average for the silver, gold, and bronze coins was 200,000+. A press could comfortably strike 60 coins a minute or 3,600 coins an hour. So if you were striking cents with a die life of 200,000 you had to change dies every 55 hours or about once a week. If you were striking shield nickels you had to change dies every 8 hours or at least once per shift. During the early years of the shield nickel, 3 times per shift.
