I buy $2 bills in $50 and $100 lots at the bank about once a month and then spend them around town on a regular basis. I go through them for finds, a few months ago I found some 1953 Legal Tenders, and a 1963. But most of the time when I get finds I find Star or replacement notes. Sometime back I posted in the Open Forum offering these stars as I do not collect them. I offered them at face value, plus actual postage. I get an offer from a regular here, but he advises cannot pay right away. So I wait into the next week, nothing. I forget about the $2's stars that I have. I find them about a month later, PM the regular that expressed interest in them, nothing. Zip, zilch nada. En otros palabras, hasta la vista! So okay, I post them on the Open Forum again a couple of weeks ago. Again a regular in the Paper Money forum expresses an interest in them. I have sent this regular some other items, in the hopes that they would pay me, and the amount for the other items was small so it was okay to hold off. Then they wanted the $2 stars, and we agreed I would send the notes, and that they would pay for them at the same time. Zip, zilch, nada, en otros palabras, hasta la vista. So I am out the other items I sent them, the $2 bills, etc. Wowza, who knew I would have such miserable luck with $2 bills. Guess for now on, I will just spend them instead of send them to the abysses.
Hey Scott... So sorry about the disappointment and a CT'er who gives us all a bad name. If it had been me you would have gotten my money before you sent your money. If I collected notes on purpose I would certainly have purchased them from you.. someone I can trust. Jeankay
Aw, man!! Sorry to hear you got burnt like that. I would have jumped all over those and understand the need to pay before getting. Hey, if you still have any in the future ping me.....I am always looking for stuff like that.... Smaugy
YOu gotta rip off one of the corners to avoid getting the burn according to folklore and what they supposedly were used to pay for.
Same here. Honesty is always the best policy. A person's reputation is as good as gold, in my opinion.
I am game, when and where do we start?? Even if I just find fools gold I will be more ahead than I am now. :smile Smaugy
Er I think I maybe one of those you PM'ed about them to... sorry about lack of response, I honestly just forgot, and didn't reply to your later PMs because I went through a rather large chunk of time without coming by this board so didn't see them.
Scottish - Well, errrr. Honestly, you're really to blame here. I think many of us have relatives we wouldn't send things to unless we received full payment first! And yet, you will send hard cash to some guy named "spotted_underware" because he contributes regularly to a forum. Jury is out on this one!!!!
I hear what you are saying BUT, I have been in the same position with a quarter swap. Someone had to go first - which I did. A set of hand picked P's went west and nothing ever came back. This was more than a year ago and that member who had many posts prior to this has only logged in maybe two or three times since. He knows who he is and he will have to live with the fact that he stole from someone who trusted him. He is fairly young so he has a long time to think about it. Other members have been very generous so the one bad experience doesn't come close to the ten or so great experiences. Sorry it happened to you Scottishmoney...
Actually you make a good point. Either someone sends the goods first or someone sends the money first. Always a risk. I was only thiniking in one direction.
Exactly, I recently swapped for face some larger old denomination notes. The other party sent me a check and then I sent him the notes. He took the risk that I would send the notes after sending me a fair amount of money. In this case, there was no risk involved but he still had to trust me.
For some reason scottishmoney's post has brought back memories of dak and "The Golden Coin Hunt" contest. Lou
I had a similar experience, not on this forum but on the other coin forum (that I know scottishmoney is also a member or...people instead of talk ) A certain person from Spain was asking people if they had license plates from different locals as he was collecting them, I told him I had a stack of old Texas plates I would send him. We made an agreement that I would send the plates, tell him what the shipping amounted to, he would send me something of equal value. The shipping was quite a bit as the plates are heavy and there were more than one, but I was completely honest about how much it cost me and even left it up to him as to what to send, it didnt need to be equal, just something interesting. To date I have received nothing from him. I saw that he visited the forum here and there and even posted once or twice since so I sent him an e-mail, he said he was going to do it...again...nothing. So I am out the money it took to send it. I chalked it up to 'my bad' and moved on. I know scottishmoney is a stand up guy, nice and generous and sends what he said he will send.... Although it wasn't a trade situation, I probably owe him SOMETHING as he sent me a nice example of a Portuguese coin I liked a lot and asked nothing in return.
Wowza, that deal smells disturbingly sounds like mine. I sent a load of Texas, California, and Michigan plates to someone in Spain, and yes, the postage was rather egregious, like $20 or something, but I did get some coins in return, but... they were decidedly snarfy and looked as though they had been fired as grape shot. In essence I got a $5 pile of junk box coins for that trade. And yeppers, last I was on that other venue, he was still an occasional visitor and poster there. But not all is bad in Iberia, the Portuguese coin you mentioned that I sent you came from another trader in Portugal, and he tries hard to best you in what is sent. I have gotten quite a type set of early 20th century Portuguese coins, and some wonderful surprises from him. I have a whole bunch of the 4 Centavos coins from 1917-1919 including several die break progression varieties. It is one of my favourite coins.
