I have 1939 Nickles and on the front of the holder they are in it says 1939-BU. Can you tell me what "BU" means?

    Thanks,

Usually it means brilliant uncirculated (roughly MS60/61)

Sometimes some tricky individuals use it to mean borderline uncirculated, like AU55 or AU58.

Your's is probably the first one.

BU is sort of a dated term, it means Brilliant Uncirculated. It would equate to MS (Mint State) on the 70 point scale.

That would make sense because the coins are from our Grandfather. Thanks!
