I know it's in poor condition but I just started looking. So can anyone tell me if it's a scarce series. The series is from 2001 if you can't see it.
Nice find! Although it is a little rough and not from a scarce series, it's still fun to find them and since it's your first...I'd say it's a keeper. That note is a Series 2001 San Francisco (L) star note. It comes from a printing of 5.12 million, so it's not scarce. But, an interesting fact about it is there were only 2 star note runs in the 2001 series...so you're already half way to completing the set. The only other 2001 $5 star note was the Dallas (K) star note of which they produced 3.2 million.
Good find. I just came back from Vegas - with all the bills that went through my hands I saw exactly 2 star notes. I cashed tickets for the "old people" just so I could search their bills for star notes. One was a five in much worse shape than yours and another was a $20 star note(in good crisp shape). Here is a link where you can check it. Of course it points to the $20, but you can find the 5's.
