I purchased this coin a couple years ago with the ID of a Marcianopolis Diadumenian. @dougsmit correctly and kindly pointed out that this coin is not from Marcianopolis. And also noted the ICTPO on the reverse. This helped narrow my research to Nicopolis. However, I cannot find a Diadumenian from Nicopolis with the crescent moon reverse. I’ve found a number of other emps, chiefly Caracalla, sept sev and Elagabalus to name a few. Adding to the confusion is a rough obverse written in Greek. In these types it seems the emperors name is on the left side. Looking at other coins of Diadumenian from Nicopolis, I think I’m reading his name... though could be wishful thinking and actually be Antoninus aka Caracalla. Does anyone know if Diadumenian has coins from Nicopolis with the crescent moon reverse? And more importantly, who is on my coin??? It is about 17 MM and 3.4 gr Any help is appreciated.
A very similar Caracalla AE 17-18, probably same dies: Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, Coins of Nicopolis, 2012 ed., p. 221, 2nd and 3rd coin from bottom. Legends: M AVP K ANTΩNIN NIKOΠOΛITΩN ΠPOC ICT, Crescent and 8-pointed star.
If Nicopolis issued such a coin for Diadumenian, it's not listed in AMNG I, which is a VERY complete resource for coins of this city.
I thought I had the exact same type but, the Reverse legend differs slightly & it has a 5 pointed Star. NIKOPOLIT?PROCIC 4.00G - 16MM
