I'm not sure where you're looking, but 2003 $5 stars were printed for Philadelphia, Chicago, and San Francisco (and not Dallas). This serial DL06880000* is from a full-length print run, so it's not scarce for that reason. But serials ending in four zeroes are tough to find, so it might actually get a decent premium if it's in good shape.... On the other hand, DL00099360* is from a (different) full-length run, and not particularly interesting to a collector of fancy serials, so it'd only be worth marginally over face.
My mistake...I was looking at the Guide Book for US Paper Money, Arthur and Ira Friedburg...not S/L 8th edition... page #149.... RickieB
Hummm..well looking in the Schwartz/Linquist 8th edition page#167 it shows that San FranCisco and Chicago were the only two districts to have stars printed...The other book I use is used simply to track the notes I have in the collection and is not so reliable. The San Francisco stars were 3.2 million printed and listed value is $35 RickieB
That edition must've been published while the 2003 series was still in production, then.... The total printage for the San Francisco stars ended up at 6,720,000, and there was a Philly star run printed at the very end of the series. (One major dealer has been offering full packs of the Philly stars in some of the hobby publications lately, with breathless ad copy about how they're UNLISTED IN ANY REFERENCE! and clearly very rare. That guy just needs to find a reference that's updated more often than once every few years. Hint, hint.)
