Got this 1864 Indian because it had the pointed bust and hopefully the "L" for the designer. It may be that the "L" is worn smooth or maybe all 1864 pointed bust did not have the "L". OR it may be that this is not even a pointed bust, but it sure looks like one to me. What do you think ? I lightened up the scan for visibility purposes.
Thanks Indianhead, it is hard to distinquish the "L" even in your post. Maybe I am not seeing what I am supposed to be seeing ?
Tilt your head or the coin 90 degrees. The eye has a hard time seeing it as an "L" looking at the coin with date down ( normal position). Jim
mojavedave: #1) the L is on the ribbon, if your coin had it it has enough detail to see the L. #2) yours is not a pointed bust; #3) your coin looks to be CN not copper? Which is it? if it is the copper-nickel then there is no L.
Where the "L" is the L Hi ! Frank, Are you sure this is not a pointed bust ? I though for sure it was, course I am new at the game, so what do I know ? Which leads me to ask, what is CN ? I thought there were just Copper and Bronze. It looks like copper to me but I don't know how to tell the materials, Maybe by weight ? Thanks for your comments, Dave
CN is Copper Nickel Dave. I'm glad the last pic helped you. The Copper Nickel is 72 grains (4.67 grams) The Bronze is 3.11 grams.
The copper nickel coin is also thicker than the bronze. You can tell by sitting the two side by side.
Dave: Easiest way to tell: The Copper-nickel is whitish, and much lighter in color. Look at any Flying Eagle cent. And, yes, not a pointed bust.
