This beautiful carving was done on a "common" 1921 Morgan Dollar of which over 80 million were minted and probably had a value of about $12. Nothing Historical about it. The carving has increased the coins value many time over. Nothing wrong with that.

I'll try to remain impartial in this conflict. I would, however, like to know Satootoko's reasoning for editing the comment. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the comment; perhaps there's something in the forum rules....?

Yes 80 million may have been made but think about how many over the years have been melted by refiners and the like. Satootoko is just out to get me plain and simple. He knows he went too far in editing my message and that's why he hasn't posted a response defending his action.

NOS, You are clueless. Coin carvings, which originated with the "hobo nickel" carvings are a fine art form, especially those produced by artists as skilled as BILLZACH. These works of art command premiums prices from those who collect them.

Stop trolling this board with your knee-jerk comments, sit back, post less, and learn more.

This is the way I thought at one time, but the truth of the mater is that older circulated coins are simply not are and never will be. A circulated silver dollar (Morgan or later, anyway) will never be rare and the value added by having an expert carve it is far greater than any value it would have in it’s original state. Also, for all we know, these carved coins are on culls – coins with damage, etc. The carving might be wiping that damage away, but the value of the coin was already reduced to bullion.

I know that buying and selling is not allowed on the regular Forum, so this is not a solicitation, but I am wondering how much a carved dollar goes for? (Rough numbers).

    I am just curious. Thanks.

Bill, Great job, as always. Thanks for sharing!

You are creating a legacy of folk art that collectors today and many generations down the road will be thankful for. Really cool, man!

I also meant to ask...do you "sign" or mark your stuff? I have a stamp with my initials in 1/32" letters which I have started to use on my counterstampin projects. My stuff is pretty low brow comapred to yours, but I still mark it for posterity.

every carving i,ve carved the last 8 years is signed [ engraved deep ] with my trademark, a fancy z..also my carvings are numbered and recorded by me and the original hobo nickel society secretary [ o.h.n.s.]..i,m glad to see a interest of carved coins on forum , but wished it hadn,t started a conflict of words between members...as to the host coins i use to carve on, 99.9 of my buyers want xf or au coins....also a lot of my customers send me the coins they want a subject carved on...i once had a customer that wanted a xf $20 gold piece carved with president grant on it, the book value on his coin was $1200 plus, i told him to think about it for a while and to get back with me, after 8 to 10 emails and 6 months i accepted the job...i also was given 2 ohio state quarters in folders signed by two members of the crew of the space shuttle mission sts-111 and two suit patches, so carving coins enabled my two grandsons to have two out of 10 signed by astronaut ohio state quarters...i,ll post a picture of them if anyone would like to view them..

Hardly - he likely hasn't posted a response for the same reason I haven't - until now. Satootoko, as a Moderator is supposed to use his best judgement to determine what is suitable to be said here on Coin Talk. And he does an excellent job of doing so. Whether you, or anybody else for that matter, thinks he is right or wrong doesn't matter. He is the authority and is expected to make decisions. All CT members are expected and required to abide by those decisions - period. Once a decision has been made there is no discussion.

Now - your comments about Satootoko were left intact for one reason - to show that we as Moderators are willing to accept criticism - to a point. And your point has been made - you disagree with his actions. Fine you're allowed to disagree. But that doesn't mean anything will be changed.

But from this point forward - and further comments you, or anyone else, has on this subject are to be made privately by using the PM function. By all means feel free to send your complaints directly to Peter T Davis, the owner & administrator of this web site. Any further comments on this subject made publicly in this or any other thread will be deleted.

Let this be an end to it.

It's good to have a deep appreciation of numismatics. You'll probably be a lifetime collector and maybe make significant contributions to the numismatic community with your love of old coins. Cool!

Probably 40% - 50% of the existing Morgan dollars are dated 1921. Circ coins of this date do not have much hope of ever becoming a star numismatic item unless someone takes the time to trick 'em up into an elegant work of art.

Ever been to a hot rod/auto show? Think how it would be if all those '32 Fords and Model T's were preserved forever in 'as found' condition rusting away out in some farmers back forty. Certainly those old cars have historical value in their original condition, but is it wrong to take something that is fairly common and not too valuable and trick it up to be something sporty and beautiful?

What about old buildings with little or no value? Is it wrong to brighten them up with new plumbing, electricity, energy saving furnaces and windows and use them as offices or trade shops?

Old trains? Old furniture? Old coins??

Walking Liberty Dollars are too expensive. Cheaper to use the 1921 dollars.

I'm thinking a carving on a clad coin, like an Ike dollar, might be interesting. How would it look to have a 'cameo' effect, with the raised elements of the design in the copper/nickel alloy layer and the recessed areas down into the copper layer?? Have you ever tried that? Does it work that way??

I think the comment about the knee jerking was highly inappropiate. I believe something like that should have been edited as now I feel greatly offended by what he said to me there. I have said it once and I will say it again we still have a Bill of Rights in this country and socialism will not prevail so I believe if you disagree with something you should be able to do so!! So much for using beat up pieces huh...XF-AU coins and even gold coins are changed for the rest of all eternity. Anyways now the designs are wonderful but I am curious as to what an edeavor like this costs??

First of all I want to apologize for taking this thread off track yet again. But I feel that something needs to be said here and I think HERE is the right place to say it.

First of all NOS I find it interesting that you would complain about a comment someone made amd say it should be edited and then in the same breath and sentence defend their right to say it.

And your right - we do have a Bill Of Rights which includes freedom of speech in this country. But even freedom of speech does not give a person the right to say just anything they feel like saying. But that's not the point here.

As I have said before - every member of CT has agreed to abide by the rules of the forum - period. And the rules of this forum DO NOT permit you to just say anything you feel like saying. If you do not abide by the rules of the forum your post will be edited or deleted. Repeated disregard for the rules of the forum may result in a member being banned either for a temporary period or permanently. Now that being said - there is no way humanly possible that every phrase or sentence that is not permitted here on the forum could be listed. So it is up to the Moderators to use their best judgement and decide what is or is not against the rules of the forum. Realistically there is just no other way to do it.

But once a Moderator makes a decision - that's it - end of story.

You make some good points there. I do not agree with this though "But once a Moderator makes a decision - that's it - end of story." They could have a grudge against you or not fully obey the rules and just use their power to do as they please! That's why I support the idea of having Moderator Rankings. I believe there should be higher end people you guys report to right up to the top of the pyramid until you reach someone such as the proprietor of the site in question. I believe this "General" or CIC should have the final say in how the moderators use their power for this thing or that.

First of all Moderators are chosen specifically because of their sound judgement & the fact that they would never do anything such as you suggest. Secondly the owner of this site reads every post every day several times a day - so he sees exactly what is going on. Thirdly the Moderators have discussions with the owner about these specific subjects on a regular basis and what to do about them. And finally - ALL that the Moderators do is follow the instructions of the owner as to what the rules are and how to enforce them. He has the final say.

And as I have said before - any time you feel you have been treated unjustly - by all means, let him know. Just send a PM or email to Peter T Davis.

No I don't believe I have been treated unjustly as of yet. I believe that Satootoko may be conspiring to rid me by doing these little things he does in an effort to get me into a rage and lash out and then show cause to ban me forever.

WOW!!...again let me say WOW!. The attention to detail is incredible. Even down to removing the leaves, coming out of lady liberties head, from between the letters R I B of epluribus.

Thanks once again for sharing your art with the forum.

NOS.....Seriously man, sometime I think you've huffed too much of your namesake dude. Enjoy the forum for what it is, not what it isn't. If you don't like the rules, need to vent, whatever, go somewhere else. Or even better start your own forum, where you can make your own rules. There's the "door"...no ones going to stop you. And before you go off on me and prove my point....I AM in your age group, so don't hit me with your standard, "pickin on me for being younger" junk.
