Hello everyone... I'm new to forum as you can tell from the number of posts... 1 . My mother is a pretty average coin collector but she only buys for looks not knowing anything about the coins... so I decided to go through some of her coins and these are some that I find interesting... If you can tell me the values of these, that would be greatly appreciated. I don't know much, but looking over the internet and on here for a day or so... I think these are some of my mother's best coins... I havn't gone through them all yet so I might post more as we go through... but she literally have thousands of coins from her 30+ years of collecting.
Welcome to the forum! I don't have an idea on the 1891, but the steelies appear to be AU-BU, I'd put the set at about $5 (unless the D or the S has an RPM on it, then that makes them worth a little more.) And the 09 VDB, is it just me, or is there an S?? The coin itself looks corroded, so it's tough to tell. If it's a S VDB, then it could be worth a pretty penny, (pun intended ), if just the plain, then I'd say around $3-$5. Could you get a close up of the area under the date? Best of luck! Phoenix
It does look like a very faded S, I kind of noticed that when I was looking at it... I'll clean it using the guides on here and take some new pics, It might just be a scratch mark or hopefully a S when I get done ... I'll try to get pictures closer of it...
I don't know what guides you are looking at....but on here we don't suggest cleaning a coin unless it has something like PVC. Speedy
http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=1613 This was the guide... or do you guys recomend me not to clean it. ?
jasinski: I agree with Phoenix, that looks like a weak S there. I'd send it to ANACS for certification, worth the $10 or so to find a much better date. Good luck, and welcome to the forum
Welcome to CT Jasinski! Nice coins you have there! I don't doubt some of us are already drooling over the 1909 S vdb. I just want to say, do not sell that coin to anyone until you have a chance to check it over carefully. Depending on the confirmation of authenticity of the mintmark, and the condition of the coin, it would probably be a good one to keep for the future, as it could become more valuable as time goes by. Do you have "The Official Red Book" of coins printed by Whitman? The coin shops and websites sell this reference book for about 15.00 (plus postage if need be). This could help you with most of the US coins you might want to check out. Warning! if you hooked on collecting coins... well, just put it this way... you can't have just one. Keep posting pictures and asking questions because there are a lot of people here who actually know what they are talking about. jeankay
