I'm not an expert, but it looks like NT to me. Usually artificial toning shows more dramatic colors, and follows the lettering and devices, but this toning seems to be natural.

It appears NT to me, through the image. But the reverse of the piece warrants more examination. It does not fit the typical pattern of AT, but that is no guarantee.

Toning can happen on both sides of a coin. That looks natural to me, though Morgans aren't my specialty.

Probably NT, but what is that in the field between the R and the star at the 4 o'clock position on the reverse?

Looks Natural , but I'm no expert , would like to hear what GD has to say . I don't like how the toning is so even over the lettring , usually their is some sort of break where the lettering meets the field .

yahoo my 500th post. Its been a while in the making, I've taken a vacation from coins, it doesn't help that I'm financially embarrassed right now.
Looks like it could be NT, and yes coins can tone on both sides. I am worried about the feedback rating and the pics are not the best.

The color progression is right (yellow-magenta-cyan) but the coin overall displays both elements of AT and NT. Although the color progression is OK, the blue color on the obverse is very unusual. There are lines in the left obverse field that appear like something was brushed on the coin. The toning creeps up on to the lettering and stars on both sides in some spots which is traditionally known as an indicator of AT. I can't definitively say that this coin is AT or NT, but my opinion is that it is AT because the colors just don't look right to me. I am forming this opinion made from a mediocre photo which was taken at an angle which can drastically change the appearance of the color.

When presented with a coin of questionable toning, the deciding factor for me is always whether or not the coin is graded. I would never buy a raw toned coin at a premium that I was not extremely confident that it was NT. If you submit the coin and it bags, you will take a considerable loss.

Having said all that, the price of this coin is outrageous. This is an MS64 at best which is a $50 coin. The seller is charging roughly 7X bid price. There is no way this coin is worth that type of premium even if the toning is NT.

Please do not buy this coin. There are many other graded rainbow toned Morgan Dollars on the market with much nicer toning at much better prices. My guess is that you posted this thread because on some level you suspect the coin to be AT. My advice to you is never purchase a raw toned coin unless you are confident that it is NT.

Lastly, look at the sellers feedback. He is not an established coin dealer on E-Bay and some of his other coins also look a little suspect. Run away from this coin

While the toning does appear to be NT I would never buy such a coin at that price without seeing it in hand.

If Lehigh and GD say they wouldn't buy it for whatever reason I'd stay away .

I knew the coin was overpriced. Its just the toning that looked to good to be true.
And in my eyes looks like a very good AT coin. Could be a coin doctors good work.
I wanted to get Lehigh's opinion, thank you, I agree with your opinion.
I wasnt buying, just looking, but this coin looks suspicious.
Thanks, everyone. It pays to be cautious, there's a lot of funny business on ebay.

Just way to many people out there experimenting in toning. It may well be natural but if not slabbed, I'd stay away.
