My wife is a natural collector. She collects McCoy Pottery,Antiques, and so it was a given she would collect coins with me. I am a bit of a tight wad, she is not. I am a bit of a jerk sometimes, she is sweet and a good conversationalist. So, when I return to that new coin shop we visited, I shall have to apologise for some of my remarks. I always buy junk "bargains" which turn out not to be, she pays top prices for coins which prove to be worth more than she paid, when we check Coin Talk magazine or other up to date sources. So when she decided to collect a few Indian Heads, the dealer had some junk at $1.50 each, and she asked to see the ones in 2X2's. She always asks my opinion very politely (and then does as she pleases), knowing I'm probably wrong. When I saw a price of $6, I'm afraid I raised my voice! The dealer politely stated the coin was a "full liberty band" and then I REMBERED ARIZONA JACK. He had a gem perfect I.H. on this site awhile back and it even had diamonds down the tails of the headband. I grabbed my glass, and the coins....yep, diamonds. When we got home, she looked up her coin in the redbook, and it was worth more than she paid. She said "I'm going to get a small collection of these. This penny is 1907 and 1909 was the last year they made them. I'm going for 1900 through 1909." Now, it looks like I have a collector on my hands. She's already done the State Quarters! You can bet we are going back to THAT coin shop again, and this time I'll be more polite.
tightwad eh? you should spend your money generously. i spent my money generously and look where i am today
Your right about that. Skimping and do-it-yourself ing haven't worked out as well as I had predicted. Smoothing it is far more rewarding than roughing it.
10 Little Indians IH cents with full Liberty and diamonds are very attractive and you should be able to find all of them dated 1900 to 1909. Have fun with the IH cents and try to get the best quality coins you can for each date. I believe that Capital plastic makes a holder for “10 Little Indians”.
Wow! thank you Collect. That's just the kinda thing she likes as a gift! Didn't know it existed. I'll see if google can find that outfit for me.
I would suggest on the indians, you might try the '09 S first and get it out of the way before more people realize how low the mintage is. Also I would let your wife do the wheeling and dealing. Good luck and post some pics for us when you aquire some. I'm sure we would all enjoy seeing them.
Wow TW.....You a world coin collector and Mrs.TW an US coin collector. I'm sure both of you will make a nice numismatic team:hug:..lol...I'd say she probably got a great eye for cherrypicking than you and you gotta let her choose your world coins. Its hard to find gals with interest in coins in my part of the world. All they care about paper money to spend on jewellery.lol..My girlfriend collects stamps and I let her take care of my stamp collection as I don't get much time to sort all the stamps and she's pretty good at it. I wish Mrs.Tight Wad good luck with her IHC set and be nice to her or else I'll quit Iding your world coins:mouth:.
I agree IHC are fun to collect - and you don't have to have the 08-S and 09-S. I actually think for a reasonable amount you can go back to 1880. Have fun!
