Found this with my metal detector about 30 years ago in lake city, Pennsylvania. The Erie canal went through near here , could it have been dropped by a foreign worker in the 1800's? Please help me identify it, thanks.
Quite fascinating to find that and the context of where it came from is there as well so that should give it quite a bit of historical value.
Thanks for the info- confirming my guess. I might see if the local historical society wants it, unless it is worth keeping. Pretty dirty. These aren't worth much, are they?
No, they're usually not but the value of your coin is its historical value since you know where it was found and have maintained its context in that regard.
Captain, Heres a start but good chance it may be off because of the quality of your coin it is hard to distinguish the characters. I am just quoting someone else's reference that I use every now an then. The first pic is actually the reverse of the coin. The charcater with the straight side is on the right when looking at the coin correctly. I believe it is Boo Yon. Yunnan mint. Manchurian mint name translate to Pao-Yun. The other pic is the Obverse. I believe it to be Emperor Jen Tsung AD 1790 - 1820. Reign title Chai-Ching, AD 1796-1820. In grade F which I believe yours to in grade Good is worth about $1.50 to $2.00 On the first pic, see the other curly character on the left...that is normally associated with Ching Dynasty coins only. I try to figure chinese coins out but Im not even close to being good so I cant help you more than this LOL!!!
