very common tiny coin, it is not contemporary to Maximilian, just a fantasy coin...you can assume that if it is relatively cheap, it isnt authentic Maximilian coin unless its VERY worn. Who knows what the gold content is in these. There are no standards for them.
pure gold is 24k...lower the K, the less pure and 8K to 22k is a wide range of possibilities...plus it is a very tiny coin...like I said, there is no standard for these private minted novelty coins so who knows how much gold is in them....
stainless, look on this page and see if you can attribute the piece when you get it: http://www.calgoldcoin.com/mexico.htm
Its a buck...whats to regret....well...maybe the shipping which is very steep for a coin the size of my pinky nail.
if its any consolation i am in the same boat after 20 years even though almost all my coins are worth more than what i paid for them
Got taken usually depends on how much you paid, what it is, do you want it, are you planning on reselling it and lots of other things. If you paid a dollar or so for that coin, for most that is no big thing. Around me for instance the sales taxes are 10.25% now. So if you bought a garden hose for say $10.00 you would end up paying more in taxes than you paid for that coin. At a bar I stopped in at, very occationally of course, a Martini is $5.75 and that is not a real big one. Gasoline is still about $4/gallon around me. 6 of us went to a restaurant about 20 years ago in downtown Chicago. The bill was ovder $800. The waiter sneared at us when leaving a $100 tip. In a friends garage where a few were working on a car I pointed out the floor was full of coins. One guy said bending over for a few dollars in coins is just not my thing. So never complain about anything that cost a dollar or so.
Just remember, a 9k gold coin is only 37.5% gold and 62.5% something else... Technically I guess you could still call a 1k (4.2%) gold coin a "gold" coin. Just be aware of the karat count on the coins you buy.
to be honest, these little things are kinda cool...but I like unusual coins and tokens. If a buck (or more like 5 with shipping) is the worst mistake you make, your doing real good. Whatever the metal content, its kinda a cool little thing anyway. I myself have been wanting to buy a real Maximilian coin but damned if they arent expensive in better condition. ^^ almost 2000 USD, even worn example are in the hundreds Getting a coin of the Empiror Agustin is pretty much impossible unless you have thousands of dollars to throw around.
I used to see the little Maximilian item on bid boards in Southern California a lot in the mid to late 1960s. I bought one that was labeled 20 kt & it is still labeled 20 kt. Its actual gold content is unknown to me but I always assumed that it was homogeneous & not just plated. Very best regards, collect89
I have one of those Maximilian pesos pictured above, but just rub some rocks against both surfaces, shoot a small bullet through the top center and drop it down the stairs and you'll have an idea what mine looks like. I think it was still $40-$50. But I had to have one. Not sure why years later.
Hey Stainless, arein't you supposed to be in School? And I hope you're not planning on paying them with those Maximilien coins! It's not what it's worth, but what you can get for it on e-bay
