Bought this as a tetradrachm 18mm 3.1g Truthfully don`t know which is obverse or reverse On one side i can read -antonoec- there could be a letter before the a maybe a k or a c and at the end maybe an n also not sure if it is a letter before the e have tried a search using the letters but to no avail. I know you are going to say no but i thought maybe i could give it a little pollish to bring out the lettering which is on both sides but one side badly worn. what do you think
Are you sure the coin is a tetradrachma? The weight you give for the coin is pretty light for anybody's tetradrachma, even the late Alexandrian pieces and the images don't look like any of them I am familiar with. The images look more like a small bronze (Half assarion?) from a Greek speaking city, perhaps under Roman rule. I hope others may help you pin it down, but whatever it turns out to be I'll be surprised if comes out as a tetradrachma.
Correction I think it said tetradrachm TYPE when I bought it my fault I do have some Alexandrian tets so i know what you are saying. Will be disappointed if it's not Roman thinking I have seen coins with faces either side before I thought the lettering might be a clue.
Not a tetradrachm - it's a common bronze I think from Pergamon (a few others made similar issues) - one side is THEON CYNAHTON (Spirit of the Senate) along with an allegorical female bust of the Senate. The other side is THEAN RWMHN (Spirit of Roma) with an allegorical turreted bust of the city. They show up very frequently. Here is the best from a large lot that I picked for my collection
FINN sorry for the late reply now you will have to excuse my ignorace is it Roman and what kind of date. Have cleaned it a little now the left side says kanton the right side i cant quite read but this set of photo`s show the letters a litle more clearly on the other side i can now see lettering maybe a further clean will bring them up so all in all i would say you are correct and the funny thing the busts really look nice
