My lot from Naumismatik Nuemann from March 1 arrived yesterday . 20 beautiful Roman coins, including shipping and fee, 215 euro. ( 10,75 each ). Including this beautiful coin from Valentinian III. Valentinian III, AE4, 425-435, Cyzicus, Officina 1 D N VALENTINIANO P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right CONCOR_DIA AVG Victory advancing facing, wreath upward in each hand ( SMKA in exergue ) There is not much information about this coin. Struck in the East for Theodosius II, with a few for Valentinian III. Only from Constantinople and Cyzicus. You don't see this coins often, hope you will like this one. Does anyone have any idea how much it is worth?
Wonderful Valentinian! The portrait and legend on the obverse are unusually good for a smaller AE issue.
That's an unusually good Valentinian III and a good lot overall. Apart from some more common LRBS in generally good condition, I see a high grade Diocletian follis, a large and scarce Honorius in very fine condition, an Aelia Flaccilla, a nice Aurelian/Vaballathus, two attractive Gallienus zoo issues, and at least two interesting barbarous imitations. That's a splendid catch, I'd say!
There was one for sale in @Severus Alexander first auction in 2018 ; it sold for 70 CAD. Another one was auctioned by Auctiones GmbH in 2011 and the hammer price was 85 CHF. But yours is in so much better condition!
I actually bid on that lot for just that one coin. It was a cheap bid, and you got a great deal. Congrats! It's not often you see such a nice Val III! This is my only eastern Val III, an AE2 size minted in Constantinople for use in Cherson.
Thans, this is an imitation of Arcadius I believe, Emperor crowned by Victory, holding spear and shield
Congrats, @Coinprinces ... that is a great example! Mine are a more humble variety RI Valentinian III 425-455 CE AE 9mm Rome mint VALENTINIAN III AE4 11mm 1.47g Nummus (VF) AV: DN VALENTINIAN PF AVG; pearl-diademed draped cuirassed bust r. REV: SALVS REI - PVBL[]; Victory advancing left holding weath and palm. EXE: [RM] Rome mint. REF: RIC X Rome 2108, Scarce, 425-430AD. Apparently the first substantive issue for Valentinian III which would suggest an early date. The reverse legend is highly abbreviated REI - PVBL[] instead of the longer REIPVBLICE, as the small flan couldn't account for a full legend. This is very usual for the type and the age. Ex. G & N Numismatik, DE
How nice! There were some seriously good large lots in that auction. I didn't stop before I had bought four of them. My inner bottom feeder got outright greeedy. I haven’t received mine yet, but I keep looking at the auction photos with high hopes.
