What do you all think of this nickel Mint error or altered? Is slightly smaller in diameter and thinner than a noemal nickel and weight 3.5 gr.

very interesting. What does the edge look like? In person do the letters look like they flow out of the rim, or just cut off?

That sort of looks like a wrong planchet. The weak strike and missing rim point to that. Need better pics. Mike D. might need to look at this one.

The REV looks like it could be from an Acid Bath, but the front doesn't look as "grainy" to me. Maybe it just the pics...

There appears to be a small raised rim on most of the reverse. Looks like someone had fun with a gringing wheel to me.

It's definitely an "acid job". The undersized planchet, perfectly centered design, and uniformly mushy design elements are characteristic of such mischief.

    Thank you, Mike

Also, nice article in Con World a couple of weeks ago.

    post mint damage

The photo makes it look like post mint damage. In the photo, the reverse appears to have a burr all the way around the edge. Also, the edge letters do not appear to flow off the coin. At least that is what I get from the photos. I would guess that it is not acid treated but rather it is a worn coin with its diameter mechanically altered. I wonder if it was turned down until its weight matched a dime's weight.

The nickel shown would be a work in process because a dimes weight is about 2.4 gr.

3.5 grams was stuck in my head in error.

You are correct. 2.500 grams +/-0.097 is a silver dime weight and tolerance.
