I just took delivery of a pretty cheap $10 Augustus As! This is the start of my new Ancient collection. I already have a Caracalla AR denarius, and a Philip the Arab AR antoninianus. I'm looking to branch out, and here's my start. It's not in the best condition, but I like how CAESAR stands out on the obverse. RIC 379 Augustus As, 16 BC OBV: bare head right CAESAR AVGVSTVS TRIBVNIC POTEST REV: legend surround SC, C GALLIVS C F LVPERCVS IIIVIR A A A F F (can someone please explain what all of those A's and F's mean?)
Excellent! What a historically significant coin! I'm glad you're enjoying your new hobby! It stands for Auro, Argento, Aere, Flando, and Feriundo. This alludes to the monetal triumvirs (IIIVIR), appointed for the coining of money of each type of metal (Auro=gold, Argento=silver, Aere=copper alloys; flando means something like "flan-making" and Feriundo "striking"). Awesome, thank you!! I always hate to ask for free help here, but I’m looking forward to the day when I don’t have to ask anymore
Nice pick up! I'm a fan of these moneyer series Asses... There's a lot of names to collect! Here are my two... Augustus, Ruled 27 BC – 14 AD AE As, Issued 15 BC by Cn. Piso, moneyer. Nice coin. I'd pay ten bucks for that. Mine are in worse shape but have countermarks - if you want to add to attribution complications, go countermarks!
