Panzer, are you an expert on that particular coin and/or coin type ?

It's not in a holder, was wondering how your comfort level was with from whom (where) you bought it.

Modern by @tibor 's standards, being post 1500, but this 1567 Ecu d'Or is my latest old gold purchase.

@messydesk That's a great looking piece. Will it be part of your Prime Number set?

It's definitely worthwhile to spring for a two-sided monitor.

A coin from France's King Louis XI (1461-1483):

    France Louis XI Ecu d'Or
Gold, 27 mm, 3.34 gm, Perpignan Mint
    Obverse:
Shield with three fleur-de-lis on it and crown above
    LVDOVICVS DEI GRA FRANCOR REX
    Reverse:
Cross with fleur-de-lis at ends, mintmark 'P' in center (Perpignan Mint)
XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT (Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands)

Louis XI kept wild turkeys as pets.

    :)

Picked this one up a couple of years ago, but I don't think I ever shared it. 1804 half eagle in AG3 from PCGS. Picture is from when it was still in an NGC holder. It is the lowest graded 1804 in either PCGS or NGC with only one coin from the entire 1795-1807 series graded lower.

Although a number of the dates have mintages under 40K, the bulk of them did not circulate, with many being shipped to Europe as trade/debt payments. Many of the examples have been slowly trickling back into the U.S. coin market as quantities of them have been found tucked away in European banks. I think it's an interesting way to collect and enjoy the product of the longest-tenured mint of what was our nation's "southern mint trio."
