Misprinted James Monroe Coin

    I have a misprinted james monroe gold dollar on ebay I was wondering the best way to discribe it. It was the gold plattin skipped wich I thinks called back gold and the dates and in god we trust ect is very hard to see.

    The Preidential Dollars have a composition of Manganese Brass Clad not gold

    Outer Layer 77% Cu, 4% Ni, 7% Mn and 12% Zn

    Overall Composition:
    88.5%Copper, 6% Zine, 3.5% Manganese 2% Nickel.

    Welcome.

    And: Please remember that the mint promoted these as "golden" meaning the color.
    There was never, and never will be any gold plate.

    Your coin simply looks as though it is a darkened (perhaps from dirt, or who knows how) coin.
    Many of them that I find with my metal detector look very dark, apparently they tone (darken) easily in the sand a soil.

    What is the story behind this coin? Did you find it in circulation or did you find it in a roll? If the lettering is running off the plachet or it doesn't weigh the same as other dollars, then I suggest you take some better photos & we may find that it is worth some real money. If it is just a dollar that has toned dark then it may only be worth a dollar.
