Great collection! It's amazing how affordable some Indian coins can be but these are also clearly some nicer examples as well. Congrats on these.
Thanks guys. There is some hard, black gunk on the 1903 rupee. I soaked it in fingernail polish remover (I know, but that's what I can find around here) for an hour, and it had no effect. A bamboo toothpick does not faze it, nor does my fingernail. I may try gasoline or lighter fluid next. The coin in hand looks like EF45 at least, my photos do not do it justice.
It's not every day that I come across something I've never seen before, but apparently today was that day (who knew such a cheap, crappy little plastic case could house such an expensive set) Australia 1963 Silver Proof 4 Coin Set PS28 Mintage of 5,042 sets
Here are a couple Palembang Sultanate coins that I took a closer look at today. Palembang Sultanate Tin Pitis; 0.46g 13mm 1779 CE (1193 AH) Issued under Sultan Muhammad Bahaudin This example is a crude contemporary counterfeit and it displays a sloppy script style and the date reads "1113" rather than "1193". Unlisted variety of FSR#5 Palembang Sultanate Tin Pitis; 0.77g 18mm 1789 (1203 AH) Issued under Sultan Muhammad Bahaudin Finely executed coin that may be a contemporary counterfeit; it shows another incorrect date. The coin reads "1023" rather "1203" on the officially minted coins. If it is an illicit copy, it is one of the finer or earlier examples. Ref.: FSR#9.33
A new Diadumenian Tetradrachm, he's a fairly scarce emperor to acquire. AR Tetradrachm CYRRHESTICA, Cyrrhus O: AVT K M ΟΠЄ ANTΩNINOC, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. R: Δ[HMAP]X ЄΞ VΠATOC, eagle standing facing on filleted thyrsus, head left, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak. 13.16g 26mm Prieur 923; Bellinger 127 Ex. Savoca Coins London, Monthly London Auction #4, Lot 643, 1/12/2020 Pending Wildwinds Publishing
This one was inspired by someone here on CT that posted one of these. I saw it and had to have one of my own.
Sort of roached. If this was in better condition it'd be in my Eclectic Box. As is, it's doomed to the "good, but not good enough" binder
Last one for today: a tiny .720 silver 5 centavos. Crazy how even such small denominations used to be silver.
I think the appearance of that coin has something to do with the low percentage of silver (.100). Your peso retains a lot of detail regardless of the toning. This 1924 East Africa shilling, shown for example, has only .250 silver, and does not look anywhere near as pretty as a Morgan dollar at .900 fine.
