I think he was referring to how much you paid for it.... For most of my life I appreciated pieces like this because I couldn’t afford the real thing!

Maybe. I didn't think of that but that is what I paid. However, it does need the word COPY on it so I'm glad the maker did so. I can't believe how pristine it is.

JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

Why must the word "COPY" be incused? Is there a technical reason for that?

I believe that 70-CC was a fund raiser coin struck at the CC mint last year. The proceeds were donated to the Nevada State Museum. The coin was struck on old press # 1. The fund raiser donation of $150 per plate dinner was used for improvements to the museum.

If it's in relief, it's easier to scrape off. Of course, that doesn't work very well for plated coins anyhow.

And, yes, I've seen copy coins where someone tried to scratch off the "COPY" label. :bucktooth:

I must retract my statements about the 70-CC double eagle...I was confused with the 70-CC half dollar which was the fund raiser coin...must be senility setting in!

No, not senility or old age. Just a little mistake.
