I found these coins in two separate rolls, with identical imperfections on the bottom rings of the torches . I wonder if these are the result of known die errors or miraculous PMDs.

Could be a Die Break (Chip) from the same Die. Many could of been struck until it progressed to a larger break and until the Die was taken out of service. It looks cool but really nothing major.

Thank you, Mr.Ed! Does that make it a variety?

Good question. Many major Die Breaks and Cuds are documented and given reference numbers since they appear to have been created by the same Die.
I personally don't think it should be labeled as a variety but only as a Mint error but that's just my opinion.

I think the following supports your opinion!
"NGC does not attribute as varieties coins that display Strike Doubling, Abrasion Doubling, Die Deterioration Doubling, Master Die Doubling (doubling that is found on all coins made produced from that master die), insignificant die chips, breaks, cracks or any variety coin that falls under mint tolerances for doubling or normal die wear."

But I'm still going to keep them!

    Thanks again!

The only question is that it would still qualify insignificant if significantly more come out?

I see that you've already answered your own question. Now, on to the next...

It wouldn't matter if 2 occurred or 200. It's still insignificant. ~ Chris

agreed, if i kept all the tiny chips an cracks i've found over the years roll searching i'd have thousands, and they'd all still be worth face value...

Thank you for the comment, I agree with you, cpm9ball, it's insignificant, but it's interesting to find not one but two of these! I just wonder how many more will turn up.

Well, ken454, thank you for your comment, but reading the posts on this site, not all of them are about a 1955DDO type find!:)

Die chips and die breaks are common and bring no extra value to the coin.

Those little chips on that location of the torch on newer dimes (especially philly) is very very common. Take 30 bucks to the bank and get 6 rolls of dimes. I can almost guarantee you will find some more. You have a good eye for detail! You're looking in the right spots for these anomalies.

When I was searching $250 Mint bags for high grade SQ's, I found a strange anomaly on the railroad spike on more than fifty of the 2007 UT SQ's that I have never been able to explain. Maybe one day I will be able to post an image of one, and we can discuss it. ~ Chris

I hoarded several. LOTS of die chips in the recent dimes. As I don't buy or collect very valuable coins--this is my cheap thrill!
